Standing Subcommittees (2/3) Agenda (Grant Henson, Chair)  Determines topics for the informal TC meeting usually held before the start of SDM at SciTech (the Sunday night meeting) Student Paper Awards (Need New Chair)  Determines winner for Hilton Best Structures Student Paper Award  Determines winner for Lockheed Martin Best Structures Student Paper Award  Requires close coordination with the SDM Student Papers Chair (Dawn Phillips for SciTech 2015) 4

5. Standing Subcommittees (3/3) NEM Transition  Facilitates the transition from the SDM to co-locating at the SciTech Forum starting in January 2014 –Extra reminders about deadlines –Disseminating information –Feedback to representative on timing of events (like Awards Luncheon, SDM Key Notes, Student paper presentations)  Still needed? Procedures Subcommittee (Troy Mann, Chair)  Updated Structures TC Guidebook based on new calendar associated with co- locating at SciTech  Updated Guidebook available at TC website  Further updating may be required over the next several years as new precedents are established for organizing SDM as part of the SciTech forum 5

6. New Subcommittee – Strategic Planning  Kickoff telecon completed on July 25, 2014  Introductory discussion on the strategic planning process and how to adapt it to the Structures TC –Mission and vision –Long range goals including SDM, educational outreach, service to the profession –Importance of consensus from the TC  Decided to survey the TC to gain knowledge on members’ goals for the TC  Will request volunteers to serve on the subcommittee 6

Structures TC Membership Structures TC Membership includes:  35 Members  7 International Members  6 Associate Members  62 Friends  110 Total The Structures TC uses the “Friend” category to introduce newcomers to the TC Committee membership is limited by AIAA to 35 members, so longstanding members of the TC are returned to friend status on an annual basis to make room for new members

TAC News (1 of 2) AIAA TC applications are open  Deadline to apply is November 1  If you are a friend and applied last year, you do not need to reapply Norm Wereley (U. of Maryland) is the new Deputy Director for Structures in the Aerospace Design and Structures Group  Replaces Carlos Cesnick (U. of Michigan), who is currently on sabbatical  Norm is Professor and Department Chair of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland; he is an AIAA Fellow with many honors and awards, and he served on the SDM Long Range Planning Committee for many years New AIAA Standards are available  AIAA Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells (S-111A-2014) 11

TAC News (2 of 2) Received request for Structures TC to be a point of contact for several standards on pressure vessels, pressurized components  Accepted request  Also relevant for Spacecraft Structures TC – need to coordinate Received financial status reports on the three technical paper awards associated with the Structures TC (Hilton, Lockheed Martin, Collier)  All awards to good financial condition and rated “sustainable” 12

Upcoming TC Activities SciTech  2 TC meetings still planned – Sunday evening and TC business meeting on one of the weekday evenings Annual Report  Due to TAC on January 31, 2015  Summary of committee activities over the past year Membership application review by Steering subcommittee  New member list due to AIAA on January 31, 2015

Goals for 2014 (1/2) Strategic planning  Complete survey of TC on goals and objectives  Establish subcommittee membership  Start drafting mission and vision statements, goals and objectives for review by the TC Facilitate standing subcommittees and recruit new subcommittee chairs as needed Continue subcommittee telecons for more detailed discussions every 2 to 3 months Provide TC support as needed to ensure a successful SDM at SciTech 2015 14

Goals for 2014 (2/2) Continued higher participation from the TC members  Each TC member should serve on 1 subcommittee  Friends (especially those wanting to become members) are highly encouraged to serve on subcommittees and can even chair them  Several subcommittees could use a few more people  Formation of other relevant subcommittees is always welcome –Just come talk to me about what you would like to do or directly to subcommittee chairs Continue the transition to the New Event Model 15
