3 Motives for Imperialism 1. Economic Motive – New Markets  Places to sell their goods –Raw Materials  Resources to make their goods 2.Nationalism –Obtained colonies in order to gain an advantage over rivals –Ex. –National prestige  Nation can’t be great without colonies “ All great nations in the fullness of their strength have desired to set their mark upon barbarian lands” V.

5 4.Racism –One race is superior over another and race determines traits and capabilities – Because of their advanced technology, Europeans believed that they were superior 5. Protectorate – A country or territory with its own internal government but under the control of an outside power 3. Sphere of Influence – An area in which outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges
