4. This presentation will give you a wide variety of web sites and activities that may be used in a 3rd grade social studies classroom. There will be activities given for each one of the six strands of the ODE social studies model. INTRODUCTION

Rationale n Expand student’s knowledge of the different strands of Ohio’s Social Studies n Broaden student’s awareness of the Internet n Provide an interactive and interesting atmosphere in the classroom dealing with Social Studies aspects n Give students opportunities to participate in activities involving the six strands of Social Studies

6. Goal To allow the students many opportunities to discover numerous aspects of Ohio’s Social Studies.

11. American Heritage Activities n Research your family history by interviewing relatives. Use letters, audio recordings, and videotape to compile a report on an important time for your family. Make note of differing observations about the same event. n After research your family create a simple family tree to share in class. 15. People in Societies Activities n Give students a map to locate where various groups have settled--Japanese, African-Americans. Discuss reasons for these groups settling where they have. n Discuss different cultures in Ohio and study their origins and how they came to Ohio

Allow students to devise their own cultures and where they will be located in the state of Ohio, and graph new cultures on an overhead to be made into a large wall map. n Have students develop a system of government for their culture.

People’s Activities cont’d n Have students develop numbers of elderly, children, disabled people, mental disorders, etc. Discuss how different cultures deal with these aspects--Japanese used to have a cut off age for elderly, then they were euthanized, China regulates the number of children that couples can have.

World Interactions Activities n The students will read many different types of maps and relate them back to where they live. n On chart paper, copy and display the poem “Columbus Day.” After the children read it, have them research Columbus’ Voyage and draw maps of it. In a class discussion, the children will share and explain their maps.

The students will trade directions and see if they can get to the other students types of world maps and directions. n The students will be in cooperative learning groups and study selected communities from around the world. They will then compare and contrast their culture to our own culture. n Students will find out what resources Ohio provides and receives from other places and will make a chart of all these resources.

Have the class shop using American coins, as well as the currency of another country. n Have groups create land and show and tell what they would need to do to cultivate the land. n Have the class investigate how different people save money and make a chart of the results.

Democratic Process Activities n Bring in a police officer as a guest speaker on how the police department works for the people, that it is a privilege the way it is here in America. n Have a series of mock trials about different cases involving students as citizens deciding on real situations of the community.

Democratic Activities cont’d n Bring in a firefighter as a guest speaker to discuss how important it is for citizens to take part in the decisions for public services--like giving money to the fire department. n Have lists of Ohio’s laws for students to support/refute to the rest of the class, and maybe the principal.

30. Democratic Activities cont’d n Give students a set budget and three situations. Divide the class into three groups in which each group gets a situation. Each group must present their situation to the class in a report of why their situation should receive the money.

Have them present what they discovered to the class. n Analyze a newspaper to see what information is factual or not true. n Have the class create classroom rules, and explain why these rules are important.
