4 Activities 1.Students will begin their studies of Ohio by reading the book Freedom River by Doreen Rappaport 2.After reading about the Underground Railroad, the students will write a poem describing events in Freedom River 3.Students will get onto the Ohio Kids website and play the game of What Is My Name specifically “Famous Ohioans” 4.As a class, we will take a field trip to the performance of Blue Jacket 5.The students will look at a variety of old photographs and use those photographs to discuss the similarities or differences of daily life between the past and present

7 Activities 1.Discuss as a class what careers are present in our society 2.After discussion, make a chart of the top five jobs in which the students show most interest 3.Each day during one week, go into more depth of each of the top five careers 4.Make creative costumes/uniforms for each of the careers 5.Set up five jobs centers in the classroom, and have the students interact in each center

13 Activities 1.Share the book Grocery Store: A Complete Theme Unit Including Learning Centers 2.Make a KWL (Know/Want to Know/What Learned) about the process of food getting to the grocery store 3.Make a timeline for the process of the food going to the store 4.Take a field trip to the local grocery store to see the end process 5.Return to the KWL chart and write what was learned in the experience

16 Activities 1.Take a field trip to the local municipal building to meet the mayor and other officials 2.Discuss the 3 different systems of the government and what they do for us 3.Have photographs of government buildings in Ohio including things like the state capital build and court building, and place them on the Ohio map in correct area 4.Discuss the rules in the classroom and how they relate to the real world and the 3 different systems of the government 5.Predict what will happen when rules are followed or broken in certain situations related to the school environment
