3 Objectives of SS Strands  The Ohio Department of Education has created these Social Studies strands in an attempt to develop a variety of crucial skills within the same SS classroom.  The strands help guide teachers who are unsure of how to develop these areas of SS into their classes, and will strengthen their abilities as a teacher.

6 American Heritage - Activities u Determine the origin of your family name. u Trace your family tree back at least 4 generations. u Locate Native American tribes that used to live in your area. u Video and Open Response Questions- Plymouth Rock, My Home. u Investigate why the original 13 colonies felt they had to break free from England.

8 People in Societies - Activities u Determine the population of the United States…and the rest of the world. u Investigate a major religion and determine its effect on the rest of the world. u Map where the AIDS virus is most deadly, and write down 3 reasons why such a location would be the most detrimental. u Essay - What role does the UN play in aiding the world’s citizens? u Magazine Collage - How does American culture effect the rest of the world?

Rest of the World’s influence. u Current Events - Newspaper Article Summaries. u Cooperative Activity - Determine one success and one failure of the Global Community (UN for example). u Debate - Should the US act as the World’s “peace keeper”?

12 Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities - Activities u Register to Vote. u Apply for the Selective Service and for Jury Duty. u Evaluate a W-2 form and file a tax return (real if possible). u 1-2 page essay about the importance of the 1st Amendment in their everyday lives. u Debate on controversial rights - - Right to bear arms - Freedom of Religion (in schools) - Privacy Rights (after Sept. 11th)

16 Decision Making and Resources - Activities u Evaluate a summary of the Federal Budget and Determine the deficit or surplus for the upcoming year. u Read article on Leadership and Street Democracy written by Eric Harper. u Worksheet about the new money printed by the United States. u CD ROM - Global Money: Yen, Euro, Peso, Pound, Dollar. u Write an essay about which 3 people are the most important world leaders today. (2- 3 pages)

18 Science, Technology, and Society - Activities u Create a Power Point presentation to present your history topic to the rest of the class. u Film a short video (3-5 min.) reacting a moment in history. u Use the Internet to research a topic for a paper. Reference at least 4 sites visited…giving their URL’s. u Review a Hollywood history production and compare and contrast it to the original events studied in class. u Use the Internet to register to vote, apply for the selective service, file a tax return, or e-mail your congressman. In addition, visit various government agencies online.
