4 Hospitality The word ‘Hospitality’ comes from the Latin word ‘hospes’, which means HOST or GUEST. Hospitality has Come to mean meeting the needs of guests with kindness and goodwill. The hospitality industry provides services to people away from home. These services include: Food, lodging (a place to sleep), recreation, and travel Hospitality is a “people serving people business.” Service is at the heart of hospitality business. Hospitality workers are dedicated to creating positive experiences for their guests. The GOAL of hospitality industry is to make sure that guests feel good, safe, and happy as a result of using their business.

5 Size and Economic Impact
In the United States, more than 18 million people work in the hospitality industry. In other words, the hospitality industry provides approximately ONE of every EIGHT jobs in the United States. Here is a small of the jobs in hospitality: Servers, Chefs, Travel Agents, Room Attendants, Hotel Managers, Meeting Planners, Restaurant Managers, Tour Operators, Convention and Visitor Bureau Workers, Theme Park and National Park Employees, and Catering Directors.

6 Diversity When something is DIVERSE, it is made of elements that are different from each other. The hospitality industry includes many businesses that are different from each other. Some are small. Some are large. Some provide food. Some provide a place to sleep. Some provide entertainment. Some provide transportation.

7 Diversity Continued… The people who use hospitality businesses are DIVERSE. A hospitality business may serve GUESTS from all over the world. The guests may be different ages, cultures, and religions. Guests may also have disabilities and need special help. The PEOPLE WHO WORK in the hospitality business also are diverse. They may come from different countries. They may have different languages, religions, abilities, levels of education, interests and ages.

8 Complexity When something is COMPLEX, it is made of two or more parts.
The hospitality industry consists of FOUR parts: Food and Beverage, Lodging, Recreation, and Travel and Tourism. Each part is called a SEGEMENT. Something that is COMPLEX often has parts that are hard to separate from each other. The hospitality industry is complex because many of the parts of the industry work together and are hard to separate from each other. For example: Many lodging businesses also offer food and beverages. In this way, the hospitality industry is complex.

9 Food and Beverage The food and beverage industry consist of businesses that prepare food for customers. It is also called the foodservice industry. A food and beverage business can range from casual to fancy. A foodservice business can be large or small Food and beverage businesses provide nearly 50% of all meals eaten in the United States today. In other words, people eat out as much as they eat at home. The American food and beverage industry is the LARGEST and MOST VARIED part of the hospitality industry. It employs over 11 million people. The number of people employed in foodservice is expected to DOUBLE by 2015.

10 Lodging Lodging means a place to sleep for one or more night.
Accommodation is another word often used to mean a place to sleep. The lodging industry consists of businesses that provide overnight accommodations. A business that provides overnight accommodations is often called a lodging property. Lodging businesses vary from expensive resort hotels to budget motels. There are more than FOUR MILLION guest rooms in approximately 60,000 different facilities through out the United States. There are 13 MILLION rooms worldwide.

11 Recreation Recreation is any activity that people do for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment. The GOAL of recreation is to refresh a person’s body and mind. The recreation industry consists of businesses that provide activities for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment. There are FOUR types of recreation businesses: Entertainment, Attractions, Spectator Sports, and Participatory Sports

Enertainment Businesses Provide a show for you to watch. Attractions Places of special interests to visit. Attracions include natural scenery, museums, zoos, and historical sites. Spectator Sports Sports tjat you watch others play. Participatory Sports Sports tjat you take part in yourself.

13 Travel and Tourism The travel and tourism industry consists of TWO parts: Travel and Tourism The Travel Industry consists of businesses that physically move people from one place to another. It is also called the Transportation Industry. Modes of transporation include automobiles, bus, train, ship, and airplane.

14 Travel and Tourism Continued …
The Tourism Industry consists of businesses that organize and promote travel and vacations. Businesses in the tourism industry include: Travel agencies, Tour operators, Cruise companies, Meeting and Convention planners, Convention and Visitors Bureaus, and local and national Tourism Bureaus. One of the MAIN functions of tourism businesses is to PLAN vacations and tours. Another MAJOR function of the tourism industry is to ENCOURAGE people to travel. When people travel, they use many different hospitality businesses. When more people spend money, hospitality and retail business grow. When these businesses grow, they employ more workers. When more people are working, the economy grows.
