Introduction to Minerals and Rocks During this presentation, record the names of minerals and rocks in a DIFFERENT color! If your answer is wrong, change it!

Station 1 Name A: Talc Name B: Quartz Hardness Test

Station 2 General Shape: Cube Name: Halite Cleavage: the tendency to break along flat surfaces

Station 3 Petrified Wood Fallen wood buried in mud, ash, etc. Oxygen deprived and cannot decay Organic materials break down and create void Void gets filled with minerals and they crystallize

Stations 4 - 6 Station 4: Sandgrains –Name: Sandstone Station 5: fossils Station 6: Smells like matches (sulfur)

Station 7 Used for scouring pads Name: Pumice Extrusive Igneous Rock

Station 8 Name: Galena Lead is extracted from galena

Station 9 B is more densely packed Name –A: Feldspar –B: Galena

Station 10 Used for baby powder Used to be called “soap stone” because it is slippery Name: Talc

Station 11 Special property: Magnetic Name: Magnetite

Station 12 One drop of HCl resulted in the rock “fizzing” Acid Test Name: Calcite

Station 13 Rock is called “fool’s gold” It contains iron Name: Pyrite

Station 14 You saw a double image of the word “science” Due to double refraction Name: Iceland Spar (Calcite)

Stations 15 & 16 Station 15: Crystals formed with air pocket then solidified –Name: Geode Station 16: Clams in the mud caused the holes –Name: Mudstone

Stations 17 & 18 Station 17: Gold ore taken from Homestake Mine in South Dakota Station 18: Copper, but turns green when it reacts with oxygen (i.e. Statue of Liberty)

Station 19 (a) Red granite from Marathon City (b) Drilled for blasting

Station 20 Names: Chert and Obsidian Used to be called volcanic glass Used for arrows and tools

Station 21 (a) Coal (b) Used for fuel/heat

Stations 22 - 24 Station 22: Agate Station 23: Iron Station 24: Animals, corals, sponge

Stations 25 - 26 Station 25 –Metal: Aluminum –Mineral: Bauxite 26: –Used to be used for chalkboards –Name: Slate

Stations 27 - 28 27: Shark tooth 28: Water erosion

Station 29 From Cave: Dripping from ceiling Name: Stalactite (tight to the ceiling)

Station 30 - 33 30: Graphite (not lead), used for pencils 31: Chalk 32: Sulfur 33: Copper ore

Stations 34 - 38 34: Rocks, not bones. 35: Formed with gravel, pebbles –Name: Conglomerate 36: Rocks rubbed by water 37 Found in a cave –Name: Stalagmites –(might grow up to the ceiling) 38: Holes are probably caused by clams in mud –Name: Mudstone

Station 39 Station 39: It is a sedimentary rock. We know this because of the stratification (layering) seen in this rock.

Station 40 It floats because it is less dense than water. When it was formed, gas was trapped inside while the magma and other pyroclastic materials solidified quickly.
