14 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TASKS Direct target & 1 + ion source: the objective of this task is the development of a target and ion source for radionuclide production that can accommodate up to 100 kW power from a beam of protons or heavier ions. The work package should also investigate how to significantly improve the efficiency for the release and ionisation process over that of present target and ion source systems. (J. Lettry) Liquid metal target & 1 + ion source: the objective of this task is the development of a LIQUID METAL CONVERTER target that can accommodate up to 5 MW proton power. The work package should also investigate the efficient production of singly charged ions of neutron rich radionuclides in the secondary fissile target and ion source system. (F. Groeschel) Solid Converter Target and 1 + ion-source this task should continue the work already conducted, within the task Target and Ion Sources of EURISOL- RTD -, studying in depth the feasibility and the reliability of neutron converters based on solid materials in the beam power domain of some hundred KW. In other words, it should move from a conceptual design to a much more engineering oriented study, which should better outline and start to freeze technical choices for such crucial facility component, especially in relation with the RIB production target coupling. (L. Tecchio) 2 1 3

15 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TASKS Heavy Ion Accelerator Design: this task should continue the work already of the task Post Accelerator and Mass Separator of EURISOL-RTD -, studying in depth dynamics, beam transport and matching of the beam characteristics with the needs of the future experimental campaigns. This task will move from a conceptual design to a much more engineering oriented study, which should better outline and start to freeze technical choices for the subsystems and components of the HI-Accelerator included in the Eurisol machine chain. (M. H. Moscatello) Safety and radioprotection: in the framework of this task calculation of radiation production and activation should be performed. The methods for shielding against prompt radiation and for the containment of activity should be studied. This task also should investigate the handling of targets and in particular the disposal of spent targets. The conformity of the proposed installation to the legislation shall be insured. (D. Ridikas) Proton Accelerator Design: the task Proton Accelerator Design should continue the work already conducted, within the task Proton Driver of Eurisol RTD, deepening the study of dynamics, beam transport and matching of the beam characteristics with the feasibility of the neutron converter and production target in terms of sustainable power. In other words, this task will move from a conceptual design to a much more oriented engineering study, which should better outline and start to freeze the technical choices for subsystems and components of the proton driver. (A. Facco) 4 5 6

16 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TASKS Beam preparation : this task is concerned with several aspects of beam preparation for injection into the post-accelerator: beam bunching and cooling; species purification (e.g. classical magnetic separation or ion trap); charge breeding, multi-user capability. (A. Jokinen) SC Cavity Development: with this task we intended to attack, as first priority, the technical open problems related to the construction of complete cryomodules. It is worthwhile mentioning that such cryomodules should fit the configuration and the design choices of the driver and post accelerator proposed for the EURISOL facility. (S. Bousson) SC Cavity Development: with this task we intended to attack, as first priority, the technical open problems related to the construction of complete cryomodules. It is worthwhile mentioning that such cryomodules should fit the configuration and the design choices of the driver and post accelerator proposed for the EURISOL facility. (S. Bousson) Physics and instrumentation: this task should build upon the conclusions of the report published within the FP-5 Eurisol contract (see http://www.ganil.fr/eurisol) to select few key scientific goals and identify the required experimental methods using novel detector technologies. (R. Page) 7 8 9

17 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TASKS Beta beam aspects: the objective of this task is to liaise with the target group to optimize 6He and 18Ne production and the beam preparation group for the development of pulsed ECR source; to liaise with the post-acceleration group; to develop the design of the storage ring/ rapid cycling synchrotron, decay ring and stacking scheme. (M.Benedikt) Beam Intensity Calculations: in the framework of this task a procedure for calculating beam intensities for various accelerator and target configurations in a consistent manner should be devised, in order to compare and choose between different technical solutions. In particular, production yields using primary proton, deuteron and heavy ion beams should be investigated for specific radio-nuclides. The production of nuclei very far from stability by fragmentation of intermediate energy radioactive beams should be explored. The conducting of a limited number of experiments to validate the calculation procedures is encouraged. (K. H. Schmidt) Global Coherence and Layout: to be defined 10 11 12
