SIGMETRICS Viability Review Carey Williamson Chair, ACM SIGMETRICS September 20, 2010 SIGMETRICS focuses on Measurement and Evaluation. We promote research in computer systems performance evaluation, including the theoretical development of new performance analysis techniques, as well as the practical use of known methods and tools in diverse application areas (e.g., CPU, OS, networks, P2P, storage, Web, wireless).
Financial Status Healthy fund balance ($460K) Steady growth over past 20 years ($15K/yr) Small surplus from each conference Expanded conference partnerships About 500 members, but slowly declining Dues ($20) unchanged for many years Digital Library revenues solid (1M downloads!) Interest income on nest egg helpful as well Contemplating new spending initiatives
Membership Benefits Outreach to the Performance Evaluation research community Web site: www.sigmetrics.orgwww.sigmetrics.org Annual conference: SIGMETRICS Workshops: MAMA, GreenMetrics Quarterly print newsletter: PER Mailing list for SIG members SIG awards program
Goal 1: Visibility Enhance the external visibility of our SIG Updated SIGMETRICS Web site: SIG, people, awards, news, procedures, policies Conference Web site hosting/archiving Expanded conference partnerships: Co-sponsored events (IMC, SenSys, WOSP/ICPE) In cooperation events (QEST, QTNA, ValueTools) Awards and recognition: Achievement, Rising Star, Test of Time CACM RH nominations, ACM membership grades
Goal 2: Community Strengthen sense of community for performance evaluation researchers Updated SIGMETRICS Web site Annual report to members (conf, email) SIGMETRICS history initiative Conferences, officers, stories, trivia, Web General performance mailing list Conference partnerships (Europe, Asia) SIGMETRICS 2012 in London, UK
Goal 3: Membership Value Maintain and grow membership base SIG mailing list cleanup and survey Workshop paper abstracts in PER Student support (conf travel, memberships) New journal proposal: Transactions on Modeling and Performance Evaluation Commemorative CD for 40 th birthday SIG initially created November 19, 1971 Recruiting the next SIG leaders
