2 What is a Grant? A type of financial assistance award for the conduct of research or other program as specified in the grant proposal.

4 How to Prepare a Grant Proposal Develop the proposal idea What will the project accomplish? Why is the project needed? What are the goals and objectives? Who will benefit? When will the project occur? Who will manage the project?

5 How to Prepare a Grant Proposal Develop the proposal idea (cont.) Who will serve as the Principal Investigator (PI)? How will the results be measured? How much funding is needed? Does the project fit with the mission of the IEEE?

8 How to Prepare a Grant Proposal Follow the Funding Agencys Guidelines Read the guidelines/call for proposal carefully Review proposals funded by agency in the past Find out about proposal reviewers

9 How to Prepare a Grant Proposal Write Project Description Make proposal easy to read – use headers, sub-headers Gain the readers attention Make your case – clarify the need for project Ensure proposal flows from problem to objectives to budget

11 How to Prepare a Grant Proposal Prepare Budget Identify project expenses Determine if Program Income is associated – income earned as a result of the project (government grants) Identify cost sharing if required When possible include IEEEs Indirect Cost rate of 8% Prepare budget justification

12 How to Prepare a Grant Proposal Proposal Housekeeping Follow agencies requirements for: Font size Margin Page limits Submission deadline and format If dont adhere to the requirements, your proposal may be rejected

13 How to Prepare a Grant Proposal Send to IEEE Development Office IEEE Development Office (DO) is responsible for submitting proposals on behalf of IEEE DO will review proposal for: –Completeness and understandability –Compliance to agency guidelines –Consistency with IEEE mission –Terms if grant awarded

14 PI Required to Provide to DO Conflict of Interest statement for proposal PI Assurance, to certify: –Proposal true, complete, and accurate –Agrees to accept responsibility for scientific conduct of project and file reports in timely manner –Agree to comply with grant terms and conditions –Declare not debarred or suspended

16 Consideration for U.S. Government Funding Program Income – must use first Is the project considered research? If yes, does research includes Human Subjects or animals –IEEE does not have Federal Wide Assurance for Human Subject/animals Will project significantly impact environment?

17 Consideration for U.S. Government Funding (cont.) Is BAA subject to Executive Order 12372? Are all expenses considered allowable per U.S. OMB A122? Who keeps copyright? And much, much more
