DO NOW ! List four characteristics of a well-led class. In other words, what does a well run class look like?

Classroom Management Management vs. Leadership

Classroom Management Classroom Leadership

Characteristics of a Well-Led Classroom Students are deeply involved with the learning process. Students know what is expected of them and are generally successful. There is relatively little wasted time, confusion, or disruption. The climate of the classroom is work-oriented but relaxed and pleasant.

It’s An Art, Not A Science! These are some suggestions that research and experience show to work but … The one thing that all great classroom managers have is a positive relationship with their students. They have to know that you care before they care what you know. –Mike McKnight

The number one problem in the classroom is not discipline; it is the lack of procedures. “Effective Teachers lead their classrooms. Ineffective teachers discipline their classrooms.”- Harry Wong

Seating chart Makes learning names easier. Establishes your control of the classroom. Allows students to feel secure and safe in their place in class.

A Successful Teacher Is Ready. The Work is Ready: Desks, books, papers, assignments, and materials are ready. The Room is Ready: The classroom has a positive climate that is work-oriented. The Teacher is Ready: The teacher has a warm, positive attitude and has positive expectations that all students will succeed. “All battles are won before they are begun.” –Sun Tsu

The most important time of the year: 1 st five minutes of the 1 st class 1 st impressions How student enters the room Start the work-oriented focus Are you willing to negotiate

Your 1 st Priority: Get students started on work Creates work-oriented focus Gives you an opportunity to take roll and do other housekeeping Establishes your role as leader immediately What they are doing almost matters less than the fact that they are working.

Establishing Class Rules They can be as specific or as general as you like. Post and make sure that the students know them. Refer back to them often. Have specific consequences for actions.

Management Essentials Always stay calm … students will mirror your actions. Firm, consistent reinforcement of the rules. Ignore a behavior once and it is allowed… twice and it is accepted … three times and it is policy.

Steps in Management Cardinal Rule: Do not stop instruction to give a consequence Proximity Eye Contact Touch Stop speaking to wait for them to become quiet Address individual students Student conference/seat change Call Parents Detention Referral “It takes one fool to yell. It takes a second fool to make an argument.”

What are you picking on me for?!! Make sure you are consistent. Simply and dispassionately state: “I am addressing you because you chose to break rule X.”

“Effective Teachers lead their classrooms. Ineffective teachers discipline their classrooms.”- Harry Wong
