3 While working as director for a YMCA, Smedley felt the need to help many young men in the art of public speaking. He named his training program “The Toastmaster Club” to suggest a pleasant atmosphere, a social club like environment Ralph C. Smedley

4 The YMCA, Santa Ana California In 1924, Smedley held the 1 st Toastmaster club meeting here. Soon the seedling club progressed and people from other areas and even other states asked permission and help to form their own clubs

5 1928 10 The 1 st Toastmasters manual was copyrighted by Smedley The Toastmasters International was incorporated The 1 st club outside of U.S.A was chartered in Vitoria, Canada 1932 12 1935 10 1946 7 District 18 of Scotland was the 1 st district organized outside of U.S.A. 1951 6 The 1 st regional conference was held in Des Moines, Iowa
