3. While working as director for a YMCA, Smedley felt the need to help many young men in the art of public speaking. He named his training program “The Toastmaster Club” to suggest a pleasant atmosphere, a social club like environment Ralph C. Smedley

4. The YMCA, Santa Ana California In 1924, Smedley held the 1 st Toastmaster club meeting here. Soon the seedling club progressed and people from other areas and even other states asked permission and help to form their own clubs
