Skills For Living Lori Wright Netbook Etiquette 2010-2011

Warm Up Make a list of 3 things you think you will be able to do with your netbook in each of the following classes: –Language Arts –Science –Social Studies –History –Skills for Living

Why Netbooks? Computers are an essential learning tool, especially for today’s students who are growing up in a digital world. Providing netbooks will increase engagement, level the playing field, develop technology skills essential to success both at school and in the work place, and build capacity for learning.

Frequently Asked Questions: Do I have to bring my netbook to class everyday? –Yes. Students are required to bring all of the necessary equipment to class each day unless otherwise advised by a teacher. What if my battery dies? –Students should charge their netbooks at home each night. Desktop stations have been set up in the Library to allow students to recharge for a $2 fee. Can I load my own software onto my netbook? –No. Additional software can impair the function of the NISD programs. If this occurs, the student will be charged a $15 re- imaging fee. A complete list of FAQ’s can be found on the district website: NISD Netbook FAQ's Netbook Guidelines2010-2011

Charges and Fees

General Rules

MUSICMUSIC Games and Programs

Do’s 1. Keep your work area clean. 2. Save your work often. 3. Hold disks and CD-ROMs by the edges. 4.Close all programs before you shut down your computer. 5. Don't bring food or drinks near your computer. 6. Dust your computer and shake dirt out of the keyboard. 7. Keep magnets away from your computer and disks. Magnets can erase information.

Don’t Download a virus Set fire to your keyboard Leave it out for a baby to play with….. Scream at your computer out of frustration….. Break off your keyboard keys….

Accessories Your Netbook comes standard with the laptop, power cord and battery pack. Other accessories you may want to consider include: A Mouse Not a computer mouse A USB (jump drive) or external hard drive. For the average student a 1 GB jump drive should be sufficient. If you plan on having a lot of music and pictures you may want to consider a 16 GB or higher jump drive or an external hard drive. A keyboard – these units have small keyboards. An external keyboard may be beneficial to some students and could ease typing strain.

USB/External Drive It keeps the storage space of the laptop clear for processing. To much data can slow down the processor. It allows students to easily transfer data from one computer to another. Flash drives are small and easy to carry. I recommend all students have a USB or external drive to store their work on.

Tips and Tricks There is a great pdf converter that can be downloaded from the internet called “cute pdf”. This downloads a file that will allow users to print to “cute pdf”. This stores the document to a pdf file which can then be emailed and/or stored easily. CutePDF download link

Mrs. Wright’s Netbook Expectations Netbooks are to be stored under your desk when not in use. Additional Netbook time will be given as a preferred activity (PAT). Netbooks are NEVER allowed in the cooking area. No gaming at any time will be allowed. Your netbook will be confiscated and turned in to the office and you will also receive a referral for insubordination.

Student Expectations Students will be allowed to charge their netbooks during class as long as instruction time is not interrupted. Netbooks can be used to listen to music during PAT and as determined by teacher. However, earphones must be used at all times. Other expectations?........
