WHILE THE TWO ARE USUALLY RELATED, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A PERSON TO HAVE EXCESS BODY WEIGHT WITHOUT EXCESS BODY FAT. 3 Motivation & Emotion  The Big Idea  Psychologists study motivations, needs, and emotions to understand what drives human behavior.  Essential Questions  What kinds of factors influence biological needs such as hunger?  How have psychologists attempted to explain the psychological motivations that drive people?  Objectives  Identify and define the functions of the different biological components and psychological influences involved in the hunger drive  Identify which you think it the strongest motivator for you: stimulus or achievement  Identify examples from your own lives of each of the Theories of Motivations

4 Biological Needs: Focus on Hunger  On a piece of paper that you can turn in…  Make a flow chart that identifies and defines the functions of the different biological components and psychological influences involved in the hunger drive.

5 When are you hungry?  Between now and Monday…Keep track of the times during the day when you feel hungry or would like to eat a snack.  Write a list of factors that you believe contribute to your own hunger.

7 Stimulus Motives  What do stimulus motives include?  What conclusion can you draw from the sensory deprivation study at McGill University?  Suppose a friend who seeks high levels of sensation will be visiting you for a week. What are some activities you could plan for him or her?

8 Achievement Motivation  What is achievement motivation?  What is an example of a goal that a person with high achievement motivation might have for themselves?  What are negative consequences that people with high achievement motivation might face?  How are learning goals usually satisfied?  Do you believe parents should seek to develop achievement motivation in their children? Why or why not?

9 What Motivates You?  On a piece of paper that you can turn in, please answer….  What motivates you more, stimulus motivation or achievement motivation? Why? Give a specific example.
