3 Part A: Beach holidays in Mombasa

Read them through first.

6 Teachers – open the Start file (you should use PowerDVD or WinDVD or similar). Look in the folder where this powerpoint is stored, and go into the video folder called ‘Contains Kenya Video’. Watch [Safari and Mombasa 1] from 16 minutes 30 seconds until 24 minutes 50 secs. Students are to complete the questions under (b) of Part A.

7 Task c) What further problems can be created. Add them to the table. The ones shown above are economic problems. If you are stuck for other problems, use some ideas from the video, but make sure you place them under the correct heading.

Watch [Safari and Mombasa 1] from 24 minutes 50 secs until the end. Then watch [Mombasa 2 and Lamu] from start until 4 minutes and 10 seconds Students are to complete both questions under Part B.

11 Part C ) Introducing the Butler Model for Tourism and the phrase ‘Sustainable Tourism’

B) The bars and clubs stay open until 4am. F) Some souvenir shops start to close down. Do this in your booklet. Add the letter to the place you think it should go on the graph

13 Butler's Tourism Area Life Cycle Butler's Tourism Stage Model

14 ‘Sustainable Tourism’ is basically tourism that will last without causing problems for future generations of people living in the area or for future tourists visiting the area. ‘Sustainable Tourism is a form of Sustainable Development (SD). Sustainable development is development that does not damage a place’s environment, economy or society (including culture). All three corners of the triangle stay ‘healthy’.
