A Lesson Plan Subject: Abraham Lincoln Name :zheng lixun Class:Five Time: Context:(SB1A unit 13 lesson 50) Period:2nd

Teaching aids:1.a computer 2.a blackboard 3.a tape Teaching aims: 1) To learn about the attributive clause ( “where” and “when” used as relative adverb ) 2) An elliptical adverbial clause 3) It is/was adj + for/of + sb to do sth 4) So…that /such…that

Important points: 1.How to use the elliptical adverbial clause 2. To learn the attributive clause Difficult points: 1.The difference between “it is/was adj for sb to do sth” and “it is /wea adj of sb to do sth” 2. To use the elliptical adverbial clause

Teaching steps Warming up Questions:Do you know the American Civil War ? If you know, can you tell me when it started and ended? The war broke out in 1861 and ended in 1865 Do you know the person ? Can you tell me what his name is ?

Yes,he is Abramham Lincoln,a famous man,who is the one of most important and remarked president in America

Revision definition The attributive clause relative pronoun antecedent Question: What is the attributive clause? The attributive clause is that a sentence is used as the attribution Relative pronouns: that, which, who, whose, whom and so on The antecedent is the noun modifyed by the sentence.

Now, I will introduce the famous man, and let’s learn about some information about the Civil War.

Listening and Appreciation Let’s close the book and listen the tape. then answer the question: 1.why was he killed? 2.what was Lincoln’greatest work? 3.how do you think of Lincoln?

When finish the listening, you should write down your opinion on the paper and hand in, but you can’t open the book.

Important Grammar.Analyze the sentence “As a child he used to work hard and help his father on the small farm where they lived.” As a child” is an elliptical adverbial clause of time “on the…where…” is adverbial of place, including “…farm where…”, an attributive clause.

The main clause: the subject is “he”, predicate is “used to work hard and help his father”. “As a child”, is an elliptical adverbial clause of time. The whole sentence is “As a child” and we can make the conclusion that :

In adverbial clause of time, concession, condition and so on, when the main clause has the same subject as the clause, and the predicate of clause is the form “be”, we often can leave out the subject and “be” of clause. In addition, when the clause is “it be “, we can also omit the “it be”.

2.“…small farm where…” is an attributive clause. “farm” is antecedent, “where” is relative adverb, because “live” is an intransitive verb, it can’t follow object but adverbial.

3.“she did all she could to help him” Questions: In the attributive clause, why use “could to help”?

If the predicate verb of the main clause is the notional verb “do”,and the clause is “could/can do”, we can omit the “do” in the clause, “to help him” is that infinitive is used the adverbial of purpose.

4.In paragraph two, “this was a time when…” this is an attributive clause, “when” is relative adverb, used as adverbial of time in sentence. 5.In paragraph three, “Lincoln said that it was not right for…”

in the similar sentence, how do we distinguish using “for” or “of”. When the adj shows the feeling, emotion and character of human being, we often use “of”. On the contrary, we use “for”. E.g: It is very happy of him to meet her. It is very useful for him to learn computer.

Useful Expression 1.In paragraph one “Abraham liked reading…” “like doing” expresses the act is a habitual and the act is that we often do.

“like to do” shows the act we don’t often do and we suddenly do. E.g: In winter, he likes skating everyday. In winter, he likes to skate sometimes

2.“But the family was so poor that ….. ‘‘ “so….that”: indicating the result, It is often used in “so adj/adv that” If there is not adj/adv, but noun, we use “such+noun+that”, but the noun is the singular number of count or uncount.

But the modifier of the noun is the words of “much, many, few and little, we must use “so…..that” eg: The library is so big that we can find all kinds of books. He has made so much progress that we are very happy.

3.“no more than “:1 only +noun/number Eg: The boy is no more than seven. 2 neither….nor...=not…any more than, but it must follow adverbial clause of comparison

4.In paragraph four,The whole country was very sad at the…..” “at” is to show the reason of feeling, emotion, for example, emotion when somebody hears sth/sees sth.

5.In the last paragraph :consider…..sb(to be) adj /n:think….of sb Consider as: regard as, think of

Practice : p35.3 conclusion : important grammar and expression.
