1 A group of land ecosystems with similar climates and organisms.
Biomes A group of land ecosystems with similar climates and organisms.

2 Types of Biomes Desert Grasslands Temperate Forests/Deciduous Forest
Tropical Forests Taiga/Coniferous Forest/Boreal Forest Aquatic: Oceanic and Fresh Water Tundra

3 Desert Biome Middle latitudes
Very little precipitation: less that 25 cm/year Can be hot or cold Vegetation: cacti, desert plants Lizards, snakes, kangaroo rat, owls, foxes, javelinas, coyotes

4 Grasslands Found in the middle latitudes
Moderate rainfall: cm per year Grasses but few forests Periodic wildfires Grazing animals: bison, horses, gazelles, zebras, wolves, tigers and lions.

5 Temperate/Deciduous Forests
Forest biome Short winters (2 months) 75 to 150 cm of rainfall per year Broad leaf trees Most trees loose leaves and go dormant in winter Variety of animals: squirrels, deer, raccoons, wolves, foxes, bobcats, many insects

6 Tropical/Rain Forests
Near the equator Warm to hot temperatures Abundant rainfall: 250 to 400 cm per year Many plants, animals and insects Monkeys, birds, insects, snakes

7 Boreal/Coniferous Forests (Taiga)
Very cold Coniferous trees (Pine trees) More rain than Tundra: cm per year Deer, elk, beavers, bears, wolves, owls

8 Aquatic Freshwater Biomes: Marine Biomes: Rivers & streams
Lakes & ponds Estuaries (mixture of fresh and saltwater) Marine Biomes: Coastal Open ocean Deep ocean

9 Tundra Very cold and dry -50 degrees F
less than 25 cm of rain per year Northern-most part of the globe: Arctic Owls, bears, small rodents, white fox, caribou, oxen
