6.  It is fun  “Everyone is doing it”  It’s everywhere  It is a normal part of everyday life

9.  Biologically, it is necessary for reproduction.  Intimacy can strengthen a long term, monogomous relationship  It feels good

10.  Hold on to your M&M until you are given the direction to start.  You will have 30 seconds to “trade” M&Ms as many times as possible.  If you have a green M&M, don’t trade with anyone.

12.  STD stands for Sexually Transmitted Disease  Diseases you can get from having ANY type of sexual contact including:  Oral sex- mouth to penis or mouth to vagina  Anal sex- penis to anus  Vaginal sex- penis to vagina  **You can even get some from touching or sharing personal items (chapstick, lip gloss, razors)

13. Most STDs can fit into two categories:  Viral- ones that you CAN’T cure  Bacterial- ones that you CAN cure

14.  65 million people in the U.S. have an incurable STD  There are 19 million new infections each year  Over 8,000 teenagers in San Diego County have or have been infected by an STD  1 in 4 teenagers will contract an STD before turning 20.  50 to 80% don’t know that they are infected!

16.  Bacterial STD  It is the most common STD among young people  Transmission: having any type of sexual contact (oral, anal, or vaginal)  Symptoms:  Most men and women have no symptoms  White drip from penis or thick, odorous, yellow discharge from vagina  Pain in testicles  Burning during urination

17.  Viral STD  There are two types: oral (herpes simplex 1) and genital (HSP 2)  oral herpes (cold sores) is NOT an STD  90% of people who have herpes don’t even know that they have it  Transmission:  having any type of sexual contact- oral, anal, or vaginal  Touching (hsp1 can be passed to hsp2)  Symptoms:  Painful blisters in or around the genitals

18.  Bacterial STD  Very common STD  Transmission:  having any type of sexual contact (oral, anal, or vaginal)  Can also be spread to baby at birth  Symptoms:  Symptoms are mild and can go undetected  Yellow, white or green discharge from penis  Pain in testicles or swelling in testicles  Burning during urination  Women often mistake it for a bladder infection  White thick discharge that has odor  Vaginal bleeding between menstrual cycles

19.  Viral STD  HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus which CAN cause genital warts  Transmission:  having any type of sexual contact- oral, anal, or vaginal, they are HIGHLY contagious  Touching  Symptoms:  Small painless cauliflower like bumps on or near the genitals and anus that can QUICKLY multiply  They can also be INSIDE the vagina  There also may not be any symptoms or visible warts  Itching of warts  Discharge from penis or vagina

20.  Love is not the same as sex. Does he love me? Or does he just love sex?  Couples that have premarital sex are less likely to get married, and when they do, are 50% more likely to divorce.

21.  Almost 7% of teenage girls in the US will become pregnant before the age of 20.  1230 females at MHHS. 7% is approximately 86 females!

22.  STDs can cause  Infertility  Physical limitations  Unplanned pregnancies can seriously disrupt your goals.  59% of teen pregnancies result in live birth  26% result in early termination(Abortion)  14% result in fetal loss(Miscarriage)

23.  8 out of 10 teen fathers do not marry the mothers of their child.  The cost of taking care of a baby is approximately $7,000 per year. That is over $580 per month.  How might this change your social life?  What about going out with your friends?

24.  Abstinence- “The most reliable ways to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases(STDs) or unwanted pregnancy is to abstain from sexual activity.”-Center for Disease Control and Prevention  Are you ready to start a family?  Are you ready to take on the physical and emotional risks that go along with sexual activity?

25.  Male Latex Condom  A barrier placed on the erect penis through every act of intercourse.  If used perfectly, the failure rate is 2%  Typical use failure rate is 15%-That’s one out every 7 times.  Can be purchased over the counter from stores  Can be obtained from clinics such as Planned Parenthood or the Vista Community Clinic

26.  Oral Contraception— “The Pill”  Hormonal medication taken daily.  0.3% perfect use failure rate at preventing pregnancy  DOES NOT PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION OF STDs!  The typical use failure rate is 8%--that is 1 out of every 12 acts of sexual intercourse.

27.  Is it worth risking your goals?  Know where you want to draw the line.  Control your environment  Choose friends and choose to date those who have the same standards!  Protect yourself
