2 STd facts First – Brainstorm all the STDs you can think of.
How do people get STDs? Vaginal intercourse (man’s penis in a woman’s vagina) Oral sex (a person’s mouth on another person’s genitals) Anal sex (a man’s penis in a person’s anus) Mother to child (pregnancy, birth, breast feeding) Sharing Needles

3 STD Facts Continued… Anyone can contract an STD.
Teens and young people are affected by STDs more than any other age group. Each year, about 2/3 of people who get gonorrhea and Chlamydia are 24 years of age or younger.

4 Symptoms of StdS BURNING WHEN URINATING
SORES, BLISTERS, WARTS, OR PIMPLES NEAR THE GENITALS OR MOUTH UNUSUAL DISCHARGE FROM PENIS OR VAGINA RASH OR ITCHING IN THE GENTIAL AREA FREQUENT URINATION ABDOMINAL PAIN (IN WOMEN)

5 How can you prevent yourself from getting an std?
Use a condom every time you have vaginal, oral, or anal sex Abstain from vaginal, oral, and anal sex

6 Why you should avoid stds.
Increased risk of getting HIV Death (syphilis-if left untreated, AIDS) Blindness (syphilis – if left untreated) Paralysis (syphilis – if left untreated, AIDS) Brain damage (syphilis, AIDS) Cervical cancer (genital warts) Pelvic inflammatory disease (gonorrhea, chlamydia)

7 Why you should Avoid stds cont….
Infertility (gonorrhea, chlamydia) Ectopic pregnancy – fetus develops outside uterus and will not survive(gonorrhea, chlamydia) Chronic pelvic pain (PID) Liver disease (hepatitis B) Child born with STD or hurt by STD (blindness, death) Embarrassment Loss of relationship

8 STd – Virus or bacteria? These are curable.
Take medicines and antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis. NOT CURABLE. You can take medicine to feel better but it will not kill all of the virus. You will have it for life. Treat breakouts. Genital warts, genital herpes, HIV and Hepatitis B. STd – Virus or bacteria?

9 4 important std facts to know
1. STDs increase the chance of HIV infection. STDs sometimes cause blisters or sores on or around the genitals. 2. Often a person who has an STD will not have any symptoms. 3.STDs are sexist – they hurt women more than men. 4. ALL STDS are NOT Curable.

10 Feelings and emotions from stds
Why would it be difficult to tell your partner? Angry, embarrassed, ashamed, afraid of losing them -How would you feel if you had an STD? - angry, embarrassed, dirty, ashamed, afraid, depressed If you got an STD who would you be angry at? - YOURSELF – you are responsible for your actions

How did you feel when you learned that Dottie was living with HIV? How did the teens react when they found out Dottie was living with HIV? How does AIDs affect Lisa? How did the teens feel as they waited for the results of the “mock” HIV tests? How would you feel if you had to wait for the results of an HIV test? What is the most effective way to prevent getting an STD, including HIV?

12 Activity b: transmission game
Help to understand the potential ease of transmission of an STD or HIV if responsible behavior is not practiced. Pass out cards 4 Ds, 8 Cs, 16 Us Follow instructions.

13 What did you learn from activity?
One person can infect many by passing the diseases to someone who passes it on to the next person STDs can be spread through unprotected vaginal, oral, and anal sex. People have sex not only with their partners, but also with their partner's past sexual partners. Using latex condoms can prevent STD transmission You can’t tell just by looking at someone who is infected and who isn’t. It may not be east to talk bout using condoms

14 Activity C; What I think about hiv/aids and safer sex
I will be reading some statements. If you agree with them please go over and stand under the “agree” sign. If you do not agree with them, please stand under the “disagree” sign.
