STD’S AND YOU

2 STDs Refers to a group of diseases that can be passed from person to person during sexual activity (vaginal, anal, oral and skin to skin contact). Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Venereal Disease(VD)

3 STDs Spread by having sex with someone who already has the STD
Anyone can get STDs. Age doesn’t matter. A person can have more than one STD at a time. STDs will not “just go away” you need the right medicine.

5 CHLAMYDIA Symptoms can occur up to 7-28 days after having sex May show no signs

6 CHLAMYDIA Spread during vaginal, oral, and anal sex.
Testing can be performed at your local health department or doctor Detected through urine or a swab of the area

Treatment through the health department or doctor Damage to reproductive organs cannot be repaired Passed during childbirth Can be prevented by the use of condoms or abstinence

8 HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS GENITAL WARTS

9 GENITAL WARTS/HPV Viral infection
Small bumpy warts on the sex organs and rectal area Itching and burning Symptoms may occur up to 1-8 months after having sex

10 GENITAL WARTS/HPV 99% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV
Can cause penis and anal cancers Spread during vaginal, oral, anal sex and also by touching someone who has genital warts (skin to skin contact) Passed during childbirth

Symptoms in females Thick yellow or green vaginal discharge Burning with urination Abnormal periods Abdominal pain Pain with sex Symptoms in males Thick yellow or greenish drip from penis Burning with urination Swollen or tender testicles Frequent urination

14 GONORRHEA Spread during vaginal, anal, and oral sex
Get tested at your local health department or doctor Treatable with antibiotics Organs damaged if not treated early.

15 GONORRHEA Can lead to infertility
Can cause heart trouble, skin disease and blindness Organ damage is irreversible Can be passed to baby during childbirth Can be prevented by the use of condoms or abstinence

Jaundice Dark urine Light colored stools Symptoms can occur from 1-9 months after having sex

Spread by sharing needles Spread by contact with infected blood Spread during childbirth Can cause permanent liver damage or liver cancer Hepatitis B vaccine is available

20 HIV HIV is the virus that causes aids
HIV attacks and kills immunity cells HIV positive People infected with HIV can go years without symptoms 1 in 4 people who are infected with HIV do not know they are infected

AIDS

22 AIDS Full blown AIDS is diagnosed when fighter cells reach a critical low number Symptoms of AIDS can include : Fever, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss, swollen glands, rash, and frequent infections. Progression from HIV to AIDS can be slow years or fast <2years.

23 HIV/AIDS Can be transmitted through vaginal, oral, and anal sex
Can be transmitted by needle sharing and contaminated blood Can be transmitted mother to child during child birth and breastfeeding Cannot be transmitted by touching, coughing, sneezing, dry kissing, toilet seats, utensils, mosquito bites, tears or saliva Can get tested at the health department, clinic or doctors office and also home test kits

24 AIDS IN KENTUCKY As of Dec. 2009, there have been a total of 5,227 AIDS cases reported in KY since 1982 Of those 2,669 are presumed living with AIDS In 2007 there were 250 new AIDS cases reported In 2008 there were 258 new AIDS cases reported As of December 2009, there were a reported 15 cases of AIDS in Montgomery county, 12 still living

25 HIV/AIDS REDUCE YOUR RISK
Abstinence is the only 100% way of preventing HIV/AIDS Do not share needles or body jewelry Be in a monogamous relationship Use barrier methods (Condoms, etc…) Avoid other people’s bodily fluids

Itching or burning before the blisters appear Blisters may last 1-3 weeks Blisters may go away but the virus remains in the body Symptoms can occur days after having sex

29 SYPHILIS

30 SYPHILIS 1ST STAGE A painless sore or sores on the mouth or sex organs
Sore usually lasts 1-5 weeks Sore goes away but you still have syphilis Symptoms occur up to 1-12 weeks after having sex Can be passed during childbirth Can be prevented with the use of condoms or abstinence

31 SYPHILIS 2ND STAGE Symptoms show up 1 week to 6 months after primary sore heals A rash anywhere on the body occurs Flu like feelings Rash and flu like feelings go away but you still have syphilis

32 SYPHILIS LATE STAGE Symptoms include insanity, blindness, paralysis, personality changes, knee joint damage, impotency, heart disease, death Can be cured with an antibiotic Testing available through your local health department or doctor Any damage to organs is irreversible

33 TRICHOMONIASIS

34 TRICHOMONIASIS Symptoms can occur 3-14 days after having sex
Symptoms in males Watery, white drip from the penis Burning with urination Urinating frequently Symptoms in females Itching, burning Yellow, greenish or gray discharge

35 TRICHOMONIASIS SPREAD DURING VAGINAL SEX
TESTING AND TREATMENT IS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT OR DOCTOR IF UNTREATED MEN CAN GET INFECTIONS IN THE PROSTATE GLAND CAN BE PREVENTED WITH THE USE OF CONDOMS OR ABSTINENCE

36 REMEMBER When you have sex with someone, in a way you’re going to bed with all your partner’s past partners, and their past partners, and their past partners….So, if any of them had an STD, you could get it too.

37 STD PREVENTION Abstinence is the only 100% way to prevent STDs
Have sex with only one uninfected partner who is not having sex with anyone else and only have sex with that partner. Use a latex condom Get tested Know the signs and symptoms
