5 Assessment Definitions Achievement Assessment (Summative)  An Achievement Assessment is an activity completed when a student has had adequate instruction and practice to learn the material. Examples include unit tests, essays, projects, and presentations. In some cases, a quiz or homework assignment may also be considered an Achievement Assessment. Learning Activity (Formative)  A Learning Activity is a task or assignment within a unit of study given to students to enable learning and provide practice in required content and skills. The learning activity may or may not be graded. Examples include quizzes, homework, in class activities, such as quick-writes or worksheets, or informal assessments, such as teacher questioning and observation.

6 Marking Period Grade  Achievement Assessments and Learning Activities are to be recorded separately in the grade book and are to be reported separately on mid-period progress reports.  The percentage breakdown for Achievement Assessments and Learning activities is shown in the chart below. 7 Final Course Grade  The student must pass three of the five fields to pass the course.  4 marking periods  1 final (average from end of semester exams)

8 Missed Work – Legal Absence  Legal Absences: Any student absent from class for legal reasons, including suspension, is required to make up all work. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate make-up activities with his/her teachers to obtain the work and help, if needed, to make up the work. Learning Activities:  A student will be allowed two class period days to complete all missed Learning Activities due to illness (extensions may be granted for extenuating circumstances). After the two day grace period, 10% will be deducted per class meeting that the assignment is not turned in until the point value depletes to zero.  Learning activities that are not handed in by the final Achievement Assessment of the unit will result in a zero.

9 Missed Work – Legal Absence Achievement Assessments:  A student absent from school shall be required to make up all Achievement Assessments within a two-week period from the date of absence.  If a student fails to complete the final unit Achievement Assessment before the end of the next unit, the student will receive 70% of the earned grade once it is completed.  All Achievement Assessments are considered course requirements and must be completed. Failure to complete an Achievement Assessment will result in an incomplete for the marking period. Students have two weeks to complete the assessment before credit denial.  If the final Achievement Assessment is assigned prior to a student’s absence and no new material is covered, the student is expected to complete the assessment or submit the assessment upon his/her return.

10 Missed Work – illegal Absence  1st cut –70% of the earned grade can be attained and a Saturday Suspension is assigned.  2nd cut – Zero for the assignment and a Saturday Suspension  3rd cut – Withdraw failure for the marking period  The time constraints for the completion of work are the same as identified for a legal absence.

11 Late Assignments - Homework  Homework - Learning Activity : These are assessments that are graded based on effort and completion of the assignment.  Students may earn partial credit for these assignments if they are completed before the final Achievement Assessment of the unit.  Students will not have the opportunity to submit late homework assignments for credit once the teacher has reviewed answers to the assignment in class. 10% will be deducted per class period for late work up until the value depletes to zero. If the assignment is not submitted prior to the final Achievement Assessment of the unit, it will receive a zero.

12 Late Assignments Homework  Homework – Achievement Assessment : These are assessments that are graded based on accuracy and completion of the assignment.  10% will be deducted per class period for late work up to 5 days after the assignment’s due date. Students may receive up to 50% of the earned grade after 5 days.  If the assignment is not submitted prior to the final Achievement Assessment of the unit, it will receive a zero.

13 Late Work – Achievement Assessments  All final unit Achievement Assessments must be taken in the order assigned.  If a student fails to complete the final unit Achievement Assessment before the end of the next unit, the student will receive 70% of the earned grade once it is completed.  All Achievement Assessments are considered course requirements and must be completed before the end of the marking period.  Failure to complete an Achievement Assessment will result in an incomplete for the marking period. Students will then have two weeks to complete the assessment.

14 Extra Credit Definition of Extra Credit : Additional academic work that is related to the subject area or subject specific academic content standards.  Extra credit is NOT non-academic work such as bringing in classroom supplies (i.e. tissues), attending extracurricular events, and charitable donations not related to the course objectives. Application of Extra Credit:  A teacher is not required to offer extra credit in any given course.  In any given class in which extra credit is offered, all students in that class are eligible to earn extra credit if they have completed all other required work.  No more than 2% of the total quarterly grade can come from extra credit  Extra credit should encourage learning throughout the grading period, as opposed to a last–minute effort to raise a quarterly grade.  All standard work must be completed for a student to be eligible for extra credit.

15 Bonus Points Definition of Bonus Points At a teacher’s discretion, bonus points may be included in a specific assessment grade (tests, quizzes, projects, etc.) and should be related to the academic content standards being evaluated in a given class.  Application of Bonus Points: Bonus points cannot affect more than 2% of the grade on a given assessment.
