7 Fad Diets As a class we will discuss different fad diets and why they can be harmful for your body. Videos

8 The Cabbage Soup Diet is a 7 day meal plan, aimed at achieving fast weight loss. Apparently it originally came from a hospital (Sacred Hearts Hospital) to stimulate weight loss for surgery patients – but this cannot be verified. Cons Some complain that the Cabbage Soup a little too bland. Be prepared for gas… Requires will power. Lacks good nutrition High in salt. Not a long-term answer.

9 Atkins Diet: Phase 1 The restrictive induction phases lasts for a minimum of two weeks and calls for a maximum of 20 grams of carbohydrate intake (no starchy vegetables, fruits, grains, bread). Phase 2 The Ongoing Weight Loss phase involves adding more fibrous vegetables (carbohydrates) until the “Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing” is reached. The small increases in carbohydrates are carefully managed on a week-by-week basis. Phase 3 and 4 These phases are maintenance phases – where carbohydrate intake can be increased – but only until the point that weight is maintained (Critical Carbohydrate Level for Maintenance). Any food that may lead to weight gain should be avoided. A Cons One of the most controversial issues with Atkins is that it is high-fat diet. Most government health agencies recommend no more than 30% fat in our diet – yet with Atkins you can easily consume more fat than this. However, the new Atkins has lined up with this percentage and recommends healthy fats. Promotion of their own line of processed meals and snacks.

10 5 Bite Diet Created by Dr. Alwin C. Lewis, the Five-Bite Diet is all about portion control (i.e. very tiny portions). Dieters are told to drink lots of water in between meals, while only eating five bites of food for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is largely ignored.Five-Bite Diet LIVESTRONG.com qualifies the Five-Bite Diet as a "crash diet," which can ultimately cause your metabolism to slow. Besides being ineffective for weight loss in the long-run, this eating plan just isn't healthy. "The Five-Bite Diet is one more example of a very low calorie diet," says Diekman. "As with many other diets, the Five-Bite Diet does not meet all nutritional needs, is not designed for long-term adherence and actually promotes poor eating behaviors." LIVESTRONG.com
