2. Motivation What do you define as motivation? Give me some examples.... Motivation.....is the external stimulus and internal mechanisms which arouse and direct our behaviour " A Drive To Fulfil A Need" (Gill 1986)

We are now going to look at Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Does anyone know what Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is???

Intrinsic Makes you feel good comes from the heart Want to achieve/prove a point gain knowledge/fitness ChallengeCooperationRecognition

Extrinsic MoneyTrophiesQualificationsRewards

Task With a partner write down as many Sports men/women who are intrinsically and extrinsically motivated

Achievement motivation Sports performers need a balance between intrinsic & extrinsic motivation. Too many extrinsic rewards (money, trophies, etc) can reduce a performer’s own intrinsic motivation (drive, passion, etc)

Motivation types! NACH? NAF? ANY ONE KNOW WHAT THESE ARE?

NACH? Need To Achieve Strive to be the best Will not stop until they have achieved what they want. Take the challenging route in what they do. Complete tasks/goals properly Seek independence Find it rewarding to be challenged

Need To Achieve Sporting Example Cristiano Ronaldo Strived to become the best player in the world. Trained alone after team training to improve his own ability. Was motivated to improve his football ability. Achieved his goal of becoming the worlds best player in 2008. NACH

TASK List as many sports men/women who you think have a NACH Motivation type..... WHY?

NAF? Need To Avoid Failure Not the best at what they do Take Everything Easy Avoid Responsibility Do Not Like Being Assessed Easy Route Relaxed

Need To Avoid Failure Sporting Example. Carlo Cudicini NAF Happy to sit on the Bench at Chelsea FC and now Tottenham Hotspurs FC Always knows he will be the second choice Goalkeeper but is happy with that. Has a laid back approach Is happy to take the easy route Knows he isn’t the best in Goal

3. Concentration What do you define as concentration? Give me some examples.... Concentration...is the ability of a sports performer to process information and maintain focus To process information, a sports performer has to make sense of the information they are presented with and decide on the course of action to take. If the performer becomes overloaded with information it can negatively affect their performance
