Key Information Motivation is the driving force that pushes us towards achieving our goals and shapes our behaviour. – There is two types Intrinsic motivation is the desire to challenge yourself and the enjoyment gained form your sporting participation and enjoyment. It comes from inside us. Extrinsic Motivation relates to external rewards, praise and recognition or winning trophies Concentration is the ability of a sports performer to process information and maintain focus. A sports performer has to make sense of the information they are presented with and decide on a course of action. If the performer becomes overloaded with information, it can have a negative effect on their performance. Short Term Effects are those that happen immediately or during the course of one game or event. Long Term Effects are those that happen over at least a 6 week period, or significantly longer.
Key Information Arousal is the increased state of readiness of a sports performer in preparation for the performance or activity. – Arousal levels need to be kept at an optimum level to ensure a performer can achieve their best. – If a performer is over aroused they may become anxious, lose concentration or even worse……………… Anxiety is a negative emotion that performers experience when they are over aroused & feel threatened by the situation a develop a fear of failure. State Anxiety occurs in response to the situation that the perfomer is in. eg. Just before the starters gun Trait Anxiety refers to characteristics of a sports performer and dictates how they will respond to certain situations. Personality is the individual, unique characteristics or traits of a person, which determine behaviour & can affect sports training and performance. Extroverts - Introverts –have an inward focus & aren't usually the life of the party. They have a strong sense of self that can make them feel highly self-conscious around other people, Introverts process their emotions, thoughts, and observations internally
