9 After Plato - Student of Socrates - Learn much through his writings - Republic teaches his thoughts on government - Democracy is no good, not fair or just - Ideal government: - Philosopher-kings: ruled with logic and wisdom - Warriors: defended the city - Everyone else: driven by desire, produce the goods, same education for men and women with equal jobs - Today: fair and just government

11 After Aristotle - Student of Plato - Wrote over 200 books - “golden mean” – do nothing in excess - Senses to make observations (science today) - Politics was his book on government - Best government was a mixture of oligarchy and democracy - Today: his ideas helped shaped ideas related to our own Constitution
