2 Introduction Elephant’s scientific name is Loxodonta africacana and Elephas maximus (African and Asian) Elephants are an endangered species There are a lot of different kinds of elephants—up to 40 different kinds The most common elephant is the African Gray Elephant Elephants live up to 70 years long

3 What an Elephant Looks Like
Height is 5-15 feet tall They are largest land animal The length is 30 feet They weigh 5,000 to 6,000 pounds

They have dark grey thick Their ears are large and floppy They have legs as big as a tree trunk The males are bigger than the females

5 Where Elephants Lives Elephants live in Africa and Asia
African elephants live in tropical forests, savannas, grasslands, and woodlands Asia elephants live in tropical rain forests Their habitat is getting smaller

6 Climate About 8 % of Africa gets 10 to 12 inches of rain fall
The temperature changes each season Summer is the wet season and temperatures are very hot, degrees There is a dry season and a rainy season

They eat leaves, bamboo, bark, roots, and grass They eat farmer’s crops Elephants get their water by finding a near by river

9 What Eats Elephants Types of animals that eat elephants are lions, tigers, and hyenas If there is a baby elephant around a vulture will attack Humans kill elephants for their tusks Crocodiles eat babies elephants in the water

10 How Elephants Act Their sense of smell helps them to stay with their family They also use there trunks to lift water to their mouths They make a rumbling sound what humans can not hear to scare the prey off If they get mad they will charge 40 miles per hour

11 How They Take Care of Their Babies
Babies are cared for all the females in the herd Mother elephants are pregnant for 2 years Elephants babies stay with there mothers at least 3-5 years Babies weigh at least pounds

12 What Elephants Look Like to Help Them Survive
The tusks help them rip bark off trees and fight off attackers There are pads cushions under there feet to help carry there weight They use their trunks to hold things, breath, smell, fight off enemies , drink, and eat They have 1 or 2 finger like parts at the end of their trunk to pick up small things

13 How Elephants Act to Survive
The females live in a herds so they can all take care of the babies and keep them safe They are able to eat 700 pounds of food a day and drink 50 gallons of water to stay big they spray water on their backs to keep cool The mom will slap its ears on its head to warn the babies for danger

14 What's Inside Elephants That Helps Them Survive
The cavities keep the brain from being hurt Elephants have strong muscles to run fast Their bones are massive and have no marrow which makes them strong enough to support their bodies the blood vessels in their ears work as a cooling system

Elephants ears are 5 feet long Elephants sleep for 4 hours during the night and 2 hours in the day They get sad when another elephant dies
