2 Types of Verbs Action verb – show action Linking verb – do not show action- they link the subject to additional information about the subject – Kelly is a shopaholic. – My cats are content. Hint: How do you tell when they are action verbs and when they are linking verbs? If you can substitute am, is, or are and the sentence still sounds logical, you have a linking verb on your hands.

3 Types of Sentences 1.Subject –verb – The dog ran. 2.Subject – action verb – direct object – The dog chewed the bone. 3.Subject – action verb – indirect object (tells to whom or for whom) – He proposed to her. 4.Subject – action verb – indirect object – direct object – I sent her a birthday present.

4 Types of Sentences 5. subject-linking verb-subject complement (describes or renames the subject) – Mom looks tired. – Those students are engineers. 6. subject-action verb-direct object-object complement (describes or renames the object) – The class picked Susie as class representative.

5 Practice: What sentence structure do each of these sentences have? 1.Ottawa is the capital of Canada. 2.The collection contains 1,000 items, a rich treasure. 3.John left. 4.Mom listened to her. 5.I ate the sushi. 6.The football game was cancelled. 7.Ron gave me a book for Christmas. 8.That movie looked scary. 9.The candy made the children too hyper. 10.The committee named Jimmy as president.
