SLEEP & DREAMS

The National Sleep Foundation IQ Test How much do you know about Sleep & Dreams?? In your groups, determine whether the following are TRUE or FALE 1.During Sleep your brain rests 2.You cannot learn to function normally if you are getting 1 or 2 hours less sleep then you need. 3.Resting in bed with your eyes closed can satisfy your body’s need for sleep. 4.Snoring is not harmful- as long as it doesn’t wake you up. 5.Everyone dreams every night 6.The older you get the less sleep you need 7.Most people don’t know when they are sleepy 8.Raising the volume on your radio will help you stay awake while driving. 9.Sleep disorders are mostly due to psychological problems 10.The human body never adjusts to night shift work

Journal Entry: Sleep Reflection reflect on the following questions in your journals… How many hours of sleep do you get during the week & on the weekend? Are you a night owl or a lark? At what time(s) during the day do you feel most tired? If you could set your ideal sleep schedule – what would it be?? What would have to change in your life in order to achieve this sleep schedule?

So, What is sleep? Defined as… the periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness Our bodies have TWO biological Rhythms… 1. The Circadian Rhythm – 24 hour biological clock 2. 90 minute Sleep Cycle

Read The Circadian Rhythm Fact Sheet Highlight important and interesting points as you read through Once you’ve read through - In your journals, summarize the Circadian Rhythm in your own words and include the following info: 1.What is the Circadian Rhythm 2.Influences the Circadian Rhythm has on our bodies 3.Relationship between the Circadian Rhythm and our bodies Biological Clock

2am Deepest Sleep 7:30 am M. secretion Stops 3:30pm Fastest Reaction Time 6:30pm highest BP 7:00pm highest BT 9:00 pm M. secretion starts

In your journal – write the title: My 24 hour clock Reflection Reflect and compare the Circadian Rhythm 24 hour clock in the diagram to your own personal 24 hour clock. Some things to think about… Does your body’s physiological activities line up with those of the diagram? (which do and which do not?) For the body activities that differ from those in the diagram – at what times in the day do you experience these? Are there any factors that you think could affect your body’s 24 hour clock? Any other thoughts???

2am Deepest Sleep 7:30 am M. secretion Stops 3:30pm Fastest Reaction Time 6:30pm highest BP 7:00pm highest BT 9:00 pm M. secretion starts

Circadian Rhythm Assignment PART 1 – Your Ideal 24-hour Schedule it must contain all activities that you currently do and the duration of those activities Ie. If you are in 3 blocks at school that are 90 minutes each – you must allot this time throughout your daily schedule however you would like. Other examples: Work, Working out, Sports, Clubs etc. PART 2 – Your Ideal 24-hour Circadian Rhythm Timeline In the computer lab on Monday – use a Free Timeline Program to Create your ideal Circadian Rhythm Timeline. This should include the physiological processes and activities that you experience throughout the day. These processes/activities should coordinate with your schedule from PART 1

Sleep Schedules Summary 1.Monophasic (most popular) Consists of sleeping once a day (approx.7-9 hours) Not the best sleep schedule – however most convenient for most 2.Segmented Sleep Considered the most natural sleep pattern Consists of 2 sleeps (approx. 6-8 hr total) 3. Siesta Sleep (Popular in Europe) Consists of 5-6 hours of sleep at night & 20-90 min. nap 4. SPAMAYL (Sleep Polyphsaically As Much As You Like) 2-4 hours of sleep a night (spaced out) & 7-10 naps a day http://www.polyphasicsociety.com/polyphasic-sleep/overviews/

Read The Sleep Stages Fact Sheet Highlight important and interesting points as you read through Once you’ve read through - In your journals, summarize the 5 stages of sleep in your own words. Include the following information for each stage: 1.Sleep Stage name 2.Duration of the sleep stage 3.Description of what happens to you during that sleep stage 4.Name the brain waves that occur during this stage (if they are stated)
