Middle School has two sections and classes meet from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The subjects taught are very close to those of the British National Curriculum (key stage 3). Besides English another foreign language is taught over the entire 3-year period of study. Middle School

Liceo Classico The Liceo Classico of the Educandato has one section and classes meet from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The subjects taught are primarily historical and literary, including Latin, Greek and Philosophy, but the students also study math and physics. English is taught over the entire 5-year period of study.

Liceo Classico Europeo The Liceo Europeo is a national experimental program started in the 1992-93 school year. Its aim is to introduce a stronger European perspective in the curriculum with a focus on common cultural aspects of the European countries. Our students study both English and French, with native speakers present during the lessons. Besides the study of two languages, what distinguishes the Liceo Europeo from a traditional Classical High School are courses in Computer Science and two non- linguistic subjects taught in English and French

Non-linguistic subjects taught in English and French To help achieve the goal of strengthening a sense of European identity, two subjects are taught in different European languages. Law and Economics is taught in English by a native English speaker (2 hours a week for all 5 years). Geography or DNL Géographie (3 hours a week for the first 2 years) and History or DNL Histoire (2 hours a week for the last 3 years) are taught by a Native French speaker. In keeping with the French scholastic terminology, DNL stands for a non- linguistic discipline, i.e., the subject is taught in French but the French language is not. The methodology used for these subjects (and, for that matter, all the subjects taught in the Liceo Europeo) is based on regular lessons and on laboratories. The time devoted to the labs focuses on problem-solving and group work, giving the students an opportunity to explore the material formally presented in class.

Esabac At the end of the five years, besides the Italian State school leaving exam, students must also take an exam called ESABAC in order to receive a diploma equivalent to the French Baccalaureate. ESABAC includes two written tests in French language and literature and in DNL Histoire. Students also take an oral exam in French language and literature which takes place during the oral part of the Italian state exam. The students who pass the State exam and the ESABAC will receive both Italian and French diplomas.
