1 Math Interactive Student Notebook
A Key Element to Success in Math Class with Ms. Cooper

2 Have you ever heard yourself say . . .
I can't find my . . . notes, homework, old quizzes . . . I can't remember what we did in class yesterday. NOT ANYMORE I'm sure its in . . . my locker . . . my book bag . . . my room . . . I was absent last week, did I miss anything?

3 What are Math Interactive Notebooks?
A personalized textbook that YOU create A working portfolio for all of YOUR notes, classwork, etc. -- in one convenient spot

4 Your Interactive Student Notebook will be your property, and will be your key to success in math class this year. It will contain your notes, handouts, and valuable information concerning class material. It will also contain your thoughts, your creativity, and your personality - take care of it! Your Interactive Student Notebook must come to class every day! This is essential! Your Interactive Student Notebook must contain the following aspects: A COVER with your basic information - your name, the course name, your class period, and Taft's name A UNIT TITLE PAGE with the title of the unit and a colorful drawing or illustration representing the theme of the unit.  Be creative!  Some former students actually made moving title pages - very ingenious, don't you think? A TABLE OF CONTENTS identifying the material contained in the notebook in chronological order and the page number in your notebook All assigned MATERIALS, including class notes, homework assignments, and handouts, with the pages numbered - each material must have your name, date, and title COLOR used in an appropriate and educational manner

5 All materials that are contained in your notebook must have a title, including the date.
You will learn several examples of reflections as we proceed in class. Everyday you will need to have an updated table of contents. EVALUATION - Your notebooks will be checked periodically. At times, I will spot check your notebooks and give you instant feedback. Other times, I will grade your notebooks on thoroughness, quality and accuracy of work, organization, and visual appeal. Every assignment should be complete and neat. Also, your artistic or creative touch should be visible throughout the notebook. Use color, pictures, and diagrams in order to reinforce class materials. You will also be evaluating your notebooks! It is also important to realize that it is your responsibility to obtain class notes, materials, and notebook assignments in the case that you are absent from class. Failure to do so will result in an incomplete notebook and less knowledge and creativity! I know you will have a ton of questions concerning your notebooks, and I will try to answer all of them as we progress in class. **Remember that this is a great chance to use your creativity, and change a boring binder into a dynamic work of educational art!**

6 Let’s Begin Create a title page for YOUR notebook. This includes your name, homeroom teacher, math teacher. You can illustrating this page. Number the title page #1. On the back of PAGE #1, number it as PAGE #2. Odd numbers will always on the right side pages, and even numbers will always be on the left. There will be NO blank pages. Pages are NEVER torn out. Notebooks must be kept neat because YOU will need them to study.

7 Table of Contents A reference (I will use this when grading your notebook) See model… Is an outline of YOUR notebook and needs to be filled in as you go. Page Number(s) Title 1 Title Page 2 thru 9 Table of Contents 10 SMR (Student Math Reflection) Samples 11 Notebook Rubric 12 Effort Rubric 13 Formula Chart 14 thru 15 Welcome/ISN

8 Left Side – Right Side Orientation
Left side items are items from the student REFLECTING, RESPONDING, and PROCESSING according to the text. Y O U R C H O I C E Drawings Writings Poetry Songs/Raps/Cheers Right side items are items from the teacher Warm Up Notes Foldables CW Practice Handouts Graphic Organizers Book Studies

9 ***HOMEWORK can be done on either the right or left hand side (where do you have space).***

10 Marking Up and Boxing In
Block in the notes, make a line separating this information from other notes Underline key concepts and circle words you need to know Draw an arrow to the other side of the notebook and box in Paraphrase your notes and create your graphics

11 Graphics/ Student Notes
YOU draw pictures of their notes, create charts, diagrams, cartoons-- whatever YOU want. The teacher must be able to identify what is being explained. This allows for various learning styles and allows YOU to be imaginative and creative--experiment!

17 Tips/Tricks Tabs can be used to identify Units (if you choose)
Each time you start on a page, list the date, textbook section, and title on the top line. A new lesson ALWAYS starts with the notebook open full length. Both pages should be empty. HOMEWORK can be done on either the right or left hand side (where do you have space).

18 Tips/Tricks When you finish your work early or have some "free" time, update your table of contents or review your notes by adding color, highlighting, underlining, boxing the important things. No doodling that doesn’t relate to notes No ripped out pages or torn corners

19 Keep it all together with your
Interactive Notebook!

20 Studying with Interactive Notebooks
Read the notes. Marking up and highlighting key concepts helps YOU to focus on main ideas. Paraphrasing helps YOU to process the information. Studying the graphics helps YOU to create pictures in YOUR minds. This is a fundamental difference between good and poor readers.

21 What DOES NOT go in your Notebook?
Blank Copies of Worksheets Copies of Workbook PAGES (do not tear out of your workbook) Tests

22 How is the Notebook graded?
Rubric ALL PAPERS MUST BE ATTACHED Conferencing-teacher and peers Notebooks will be graded randomly throughout class. It can also be collected for a grade on any quiz or test date. Notebooks may be collected with or without notice, so…. YOU MUST have YOUR notebook everyday.

23 Notebook Rubric Notebook grades will be based on:
VISUAL APPEARANCE / ORGANIZATION (30) Table of Contents Work is Neat and Organized Headings and Dates on all Pages Effective Use of Color All Papers Attached QUALITY AND COMPLETENESS (70) Notes and right-side work is complete and of high quality…answered thoroughly Left-side work is complete and shows processing/reflecting of the work done on the right side….additional thoughts included. Evidence of following instructions. No missing work (even if you were absent). EXTRAS (10) Obvious evidence of time invested Obvious evidence of learning. Effort and quality of work are exceptional. Newspaper cute outs, articles.

24 Remember… Student work is recorded in an interactive notebook
Students are required to bring the notebook EVERY DAY Notebooks should be well cared for, so they can last throughout the school YEAR

25 What do students say about the ISN?
What do students say about the ISN? "ISN's are easy to do and worth a lot of points, so take time and effort to do them well." "Always update your table of contents so papers don't get messed up - or in case of an ISN check." "An ISN is a great tool, keep it organized!" "You have to spend quality time on your ISN." "Don't leave your ISN until the last day, otherwise you may be up to the early morning hours finishing assignments." "Colorize things." "Keep it in order, because you never know when a notebook check might come up." "Do not save your ISN until the last minute. Be CREATIVE."
