8/17/2015(c) 2013 Morell D. Boone2 Agenda Key Terms Globalization is here! Virtual learning Classes of virtual work tools Virtual learning management Cartoon—Institutional readiness Future trends in virtual learning References Discussion

Key Terms Virtual Work – Work performed in a different geographic location from co-workers (students, faculty, staff) such as virtual (online) learning. Enterprise Technologies- Technologies deployed for use by all workers (students, faculty, staff) in an enterprise (university). Asynchronous learning networks (ALN) – Combined network of learners and the electronic network providing resources available at any time to facilitate information sharing. Communication Tools –Virtual work tools in real time using audio and video such as email, VoIP telephony and video, mobile devices such as small phones and tablets. Conferencing Tools – Virtual work tools that enable multiple participants to collaborate in real time using audio and video. Collaboration Tools – Advanced virtual work tools consisting of shared document development, repositories, social networks, Course Management System (CMS) and Learning Management System (LMS) tools. 8/17/2015(c) 2013 Morell D. Tom Friedman, The World is Flat: a flattening of global business driven by existing and future technologies that enable enterprises to become increasingly collaborative Information economy is different: Bits vs. Bricks: intellectual capital vs. physical capital Knowledge is a key player: (Knowledge Management) Consumer-driven mobile device innovation and adoption New models for competitive advantage: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)

8/17/2015(c) 2013 Morell D. Boone5 Virtual Learning Virtual worker (students, faculty, staff) Dislocated from peers/administrators Non-traditional “classroom” Changing enterprises (universities) Expanding learning with virtual technologies globally Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN) Synchronous Learning Networks (SLN) Individuals do more tacit work (judgment & collaboration) Social networking (Twitter, Blogs, You Tube) Changing technologies Short innovation & adoption cycles Consumer-based mobile technologies

8/17/2015(c) 2013 Morell D. Boone6 Classes of Virtual Work Tools Communication Tools Telephony, VoIP (voice and video), office tools, browsers, search engines, texting Conferencing Tools Audio/Video/Web conferencing, webcasting Surveys and polls, whiteboards, app sharing Collaboration Tools Document development, team workspaces Information repositories, Knowledge Management, LMS

8/17/2015(c) 2013 Morell D. Boone7 Virtual Learning Management Four Major Challenges Cross-cultural and language differences Balance between “individualism” and “one size fits all” Isolation from peers and colleagues Inadequate coordination Virtual learning should reflect business strategy Institutional vision and mission Institutional financial impact (Return on Investment) Student financial impact (tuition fees) Managing Virtual Teams Proactive leadership, project management, personal attention, clear objectives and language, frequent communication, context setting, constructive discourse

8/17/2015(c) 2013 Morell D. Boone8 Virtual Learning Management Team members (students, faculty, staff) from different institutions Adopting standards and agreeing on similar processes Team members (students, faculty, staff) from different countries and cultures More task communication, initial “face-to-face” meetings, facilitated & documented meetings, time zone awareness, communication tracking Team members who speak different languages Pre-project training & practice, translation, comprehensive written communication, time to interpret context

8/17/2015(c) 2013 Morell D. Boone10 Future Trends in Virtual Learning  Innovative mobile technologies  Empowering individuals  Innovative mobile social media  Texting, Twitter, Blogs, YouTube  Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)
