1 DRAFT STUDENT CHAPTER DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

2 GOALS Charter at least 1 AWMA student chapter by end of the fall semester 2010. Participate with student chapter in at least 1 event by the end of spring semester 2011. Ensure that student chapter submits required reports to AWMA national.

3 OVERALL PROCESS 1.Appoint NTX AWMA Chapter school Liaisons. 2.Liaisons find faculty advisor. 3.Liaisons work with faculty advisor to charter student chapter. 4.Liaisons work with student chapter to ensure chapter remains viable after 1 st year.

4 CHARTER REQUIREMENTS 1.There must be a faculty advisor who must be a full member of AWMA International. 2.The Chapter must be formed by at least 10 student members of AWMA International. 3.The Chapter must submit a petition for formation, which must be approved by: A.Section Chair B.Section & Council Chapters Chair C.President, AWMA Board of Directors

5 STUDENT CHAPTER CHARTER PROCESS 1.Obtain commitment from faculty advisor to attempt the Charter process. 2.Take initial interest poll. A.It is expected that the NTX Chapter Liaisons will attend environmental classes at the beginning of the fall semester and brief the students on the benefits of AWMA. B.It is expected that the NTX Chapter Liaisons will distribute Student Member applications to the students with the intent to obtain at least 10 student members of AWMA International. C.The Liaison will report back to the NTX Education Committee on student interest.

6 STUDENT CHAPTER CHARTER PROCESS Cont. 3.Support the students and Faculty Advisor in the implementation of an official formation meeting at which: A.Students will choose a name for the Chapter. B.Students will prepare a letter of intent to form a Chapter to be submitted to AWMA Headquarters. C.Students will elect initial formation officers. D.Students will sign a petition of formation. E.Students will prepare official bylaws.

7 STUDENT CHAPTER CHARTER PROCESS Cont. 4.Support the students in a Bylaws Adoption and Official Election Meeting; upon receipt of Charter from AWMA, students will: A.Vote for adoption of bylaws; B.Vote for 1 st Year Officers and Directors (may be same as Initial); and C.Prepare Plan for Year.

8 STUDENT CHAPTER CHARTER PROCESS Cont. 5.The Liaison will support the students in the establishment of bank account (will NTX Chapter provide nominal initial funds?) 6.The Liaison will support students in the filing of IRS forms for tax-exempt status.

9 AFTER THE CHARTER In consultation with faculty advisor, the NTX Chapter Liaison will attend at least one meeting per quarter to help support first year of operation, and at least one major student chapter event. Thereafter, it is expected that the NTX Chapter Liaison will attend at least 1 meeting per semester during the second year of Charter. It is expected that the Liaison may step down after two years from initial effort at which point a new Liaison will be appointed for another 2 year term.
