2 Nigeria: History There are a large number of ethnic groups in Nigeria Nigeria was once ruled by the British (2 colonies) They put ethnic groups who did not wish to live together in the same regions –Result of the Berlin Conference Government made more human and capital investments in the south than in the north.

3 Nigeria: History 1940s Nigerian’s started to rebel from British rule Many of the Nigerians who were fighting for their rights were educated in European ran schools. They formed political parties that worked for Nigerian independence (non violently)

4 Nigeria: History In the late 1940s and 1950s –British let the Nigerians elect their own government officials October 1,1960 Great Britain gave Nigeria independence Years of an unstable government has lead to periods of time with military rule

9 Nigeria: Economy Many Nigerians are poor –High birthrate Many Nigerians lack education and training needed for jobs –Lack of human capital investment The country’s dependence on Oil causes poverty. –When oil prices are low, the whole country suffers

10 What is the total literacy rate for all Nigerians? A low literacy rate shows lack of what type of investments? Who receives the most education? Who does not receive an adequate (good) education? What do you think causes this difference?

11 Nigeria: Economy Lastly, corrupt government history has caused poverty among citizens –Those in power tend to enrich themselves, not the people.
