2 The Australian Alps are the highest mountain ranges of mainland Australia. They are located in south-eastern Australia and run across the Australian Capital Territory, south-eastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria. The Alps contain the Australian mainland's only peaks exceeding 2,000 metres and the only place on the mainland in which deep snow occurs regularly. The Australian Alps are part of the Great Dividing Range, the series of hills and plateaus which run about 3,000 kilometres from northern Queensland to central Victoria. These highlands divide the rivers and streams which flow eastwards into the Pacific Ocean, from those rivers and streams which flow inland to the Murray River system or internal catchments. The highlands reach their greatest height in the Alps.

3 Skiing and other snow sports entice many thrill seekers to the park in the winter months. Downhill skiing is based at resorts such as Falls Creek and Mount Hotham, alternatively try cross-country skiing, perhaps with snow camping. 6 Ski lifts, resort lodges and the accommodation that take a lot of energy, which is produced by coal power stations resulting in carbon emissions. Another contributor to carbon emissions is the large amount of transport used to travel to the location, such as cars, busses, trucks, planes and helicopters. Rubbish and pollution left by the visitors also has a large impact on the environment. Although people are always reminded to clean up after themselves, it is still an issue.
