Different Uses of Maps and Diagrams

Different uses of maps and diagrams Maps show lots of different things. There are three main types: General Thematic Navigational.

Different uses of maps and diagrams Navigational maps are accurate maps of travel routes used for ocean and sea navigation.

Different uses of maps and diagrams General maps are often called base maps. They show basic information about an area, like landforms, rivers and major roads. Base maps are usually the most common maps in a school atlas. Find three examples in your atlas. Base maps are usually the most common maps in a school atlas. Find three examples in your atlas.

Different uses of maps and diagrams Thematic maps contain one or more themes. A theme can be any information that varies from place to place. Themes include: population rainfall religion earthquake activity. What other thematic maps have you seen? Are there thematic maps in your atlas? What type of information do they give?

Route maps and street maps Route maps and street maps are thematic maps that help people find their way from place to place. Route maps cover larger areas than street maps. A street directory is a common type of street map.

Route maps and street maps Give instructions for travelling from Head Town to Bigtown. Include approximate distances and directions in your instructions. Repeat the activity for two different towns on the map.

Distribution maps A distribution map is a thematic map that highlights one or two features, and shows their spread over an area. This earthquake activity map is an example of a distribution map. It shows the distribution of major earthquakes that have occurred in Central and South America.

Distribution maps Here are two other examples of distribution maps. What do they show?

Distribution maps For each map, describe the features, the area of coverage, and the pattern shown.

Mapping change over time The world is constantly changing. Some changes are very slow – such as the erosion of mountains.

Mapping change over time The world is constantly changing. Other changes are rapid – such as those caused by humans.

Mapping change over time Two maps of the same place at different times can provide a useful tool for showing historical change. What is the main geographic feature mapped here? Answer – Land use What is the time period between the two maps? Answer – 150 years

Mapping change over time What evidence is there that humans have had a significant impact on Richmond Shire for over 150 years? Answer – Disappearing forest, main road network, areas of industry, much larger housing area

Mapping change over time Do these maps show slow change or rapid change in Richmond Shire? Explain your answer.

Block diagrams – showing change: 1780 A block diagram is a 3D model of an area.

Block diagrams – showing change: 1850 Block diagrams can be used in a sequence to show change over time.

Block diagrams – showing change: 2000 Block diagrams can be used in a sequence to show change over time.

Block diagrams – showing change This sequence represents the change over time that has occurred in many places in Australia Describe and explain the changes you see.

Transects – showing change The diagram below is a transect. What does it show you? How does it indicate distance and direction?

Transects – showing change An urban transect shows changing land-use zones. How many distinct land-use zones can you see? Name them.

Transects – showing change There are different types of transects. This transect shows changing habitat zones.

Transects – showing change What are the three different habitat zones identified on this transect? Answer – Upland, riparian and aquatic zones

Transects – showing change How is this transect similar and different to the urban transect?

Transects – showing change What do you think a transect of this river system would look like?

Showing changes in topography Topography is the different terrain or land surface of an area. A transect can show changing topography.

Showing changes in topography Why is it important to have a vertical scale on a diagram like this?

Showing changes in topography How are heights represented on a flat, 2D map?

Showing changes in topography In what ways can height be indicated on maps?

Showing changes in topography Match the features and definitions. Plain Mountain Hill Ridge A long edge along a mountain top Fairly even, low-lying ground High piece of land, but lower than a mountain Valley Low land between hills or mountains, often containing a river Very high land, often with peaks

Electoral maps An electorate is the area that a member of parliament (MP) represents, and the people living within it. Australia has three levels of government – federal, state or territory, and local. People are grouped into electorates to vote for their representatives.

Electoral maps At the federal and state levels, electoral divisions are based on population distribution. There are different electoral boundaries for each level of government. Which state electorate do you live in? Which federal electorate do you live in? Which federal electorate do you live in?

Electoral maps Max Quickdrawer and Paula Mapmaker go to the same high school in Cape Beauty.

Electoral maps Max lives in the suburb of Cape Beauty. Paula lives one suburb away in Greenvale.

Electoral maps These maps show their electoral divisions.

Electoral maps Explain why there are three separate maps. Answer – Because each level of government has different electoral divisions.

Electoral maps Do Max and Paula belong to the same federal electoral division? Answer – Yes

Electoral maps Do Max and Paula belong to the same state electoral division? Answer – No

Electoral maps Are they in the same local council area? Answer – No

Electoral maps – research Locate maps of your: Compare and contrast the three maps. What did you discover? Compare and contrast the three maps. What did you discover? federal electorate state or territory electorate local council area.
