4. The best way I can explain the Internet is by comparing the Internet to your telephone We all know how to use a telephone. It’s simple. You open the phone, listen for a dial tone and dial the number Example: After dialing you get a busy signal or the person you are calling will answer. (comparable to a telephone) To make a phone call you needTo access the internet we need A computer & an internet connection & a program called a BROWSER a telephone Your Home phone is connected to a telephone interchange. Your Internet is connected to a main server which acts the same way as the telephone interchange A server or a telephone interchange carry out the same functions Receives an address from the sender and connects to the address sent. receives the number dialed and connects to the phone dialed The difference between the internet and the phone The Phone uses Numbers The internet uses an address

A computer connected to A Modem from (Bell,Eastlink or vianet) Finally a program called a BROWSER Examples: Internet explorer Fire fox The browser acts as your telephone on the internet. It’s the APP (application) that allows you to connect to web site anywhere in the world. With a telephone you dial a number with the Browser you enter an internet address.

The modem (supplied by the internet provider)connects to your computer and to the internet via your phone line or your TV Cable depending who your internet provider is. Internet Explorer or FireFox are two APPS (Applications) that allow you to tour the internet. The browser works similar to your telephone. The browser uses an address to access a web site. The telephone uses a phone number.

To access a web site, type in the complete address using lower case letters to avoid connection problems. All other function on the browser are tools to help you locate your favorite sites.

In this presentation I will not go into all possibilities of the Browser. Courses are offered to get you familiar with surfing the internet. This presentation covers an explanation of the basic internet and EMAILS. The next topic is Emails Often new internet users confuse the email with the internet. New users often use the email as a form of entertainment. Forwarding a Joke or a pictures can transfer virus from person to person. Emails is probably the most notorious method of transferring virus. Emails were designed for communication between two parties. Learn to use your email properly and avoid virus.

When you want a postal box address, you go to your post office and rent a PO Box. This PO box,the city you live in and your postal code then becomes your personal address. On the internet you have to get your email from a web site that provides this service. On the internet most search engines provide an email service much like your regular post office provides PO Boxes. Sites that offer this service are: Google, Yahoo, hotmail, outlook,mail.com & many more. You can also get emails addresses from your internet provider. bell, eastlink, vianet, persona & others An email address is made up of three component. name used The @ sign and the provider name an example mgb1945@gmail.com mgb1945 is the name used my provider is google their for my email ends with gmail.com. the @ sign separates the name used and the provider name. The @ sign is mandatory for an email address. To get a new email, contact an email provider such as google, from the google site select sign up. You will be asked a series of questions that must be answered. On question is the name to be used. This can be anything you want to make up using letters and numbers. In my email I used my initials and the year 1945 to make up mgb1945 the @ sign and gmail.com were provided by google because my provider is google.

It may take a few seconds for google to confirm you application If you made a mistake it will be displayed in red. You then have to start over

To access your email you need to use your Browser or If you requested an email from google your email will end with @gmail.com or @gmail.ca If you requested an email from Yahoo your email will end with @yahoo.com or @yahoo.ca If you requested an email from hotmail your email will end with @hotmail.com or @hotmail..ca or @live.com or @outlook.com or @outlook.ca In order to access your mail you need to go to the email provider you signed up with.

To access a web site we need to type in the address starting with http:// or select from our favorite. Next we select the mail button appropriate to the email site we selected. Enter your user name and password Your email is displayed.
