The most serious, but rarest, complication of HFMD is encephalitis which is an infection that causes the brain tissue to swell and become inflamed. https://www.google.com/search?q=Hand+foot+and+mouth+disease&complete=0&biw=1280&bih=929&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=zrIyVMTvN8GgyQTbuoG4A Q&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#complete=0&tbm=isch&q=Dehydration&facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=0_RqvGwy1ngCAM%253A%3BdGnyXjYz7XxceM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fkidshealth.org %252Fteen%252Fsafety%252Ffirst_aid%252Fheaders_93971%252FT_Dehydration_enHD_1.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fkidshealth.org%252Fteen%252Fsafety%252Ffirst_aid%252 Fdehydration.html%3B436%3B158

8  Most recover fully from the illness.  Nearly all patients recover in 7-10 days.  Most Common Complication:  Dehydration: Intake of fluids is limited due to painful sores in the mouth.  Rare Complications:  Viral Meningitis: Person has fever, headache, stiff neck, or back pain. (May have to be hospitalized for a few days).  Severe Complications:  Neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory problems.

9  Be a lot more cautious to prevent transmission.  Common in pregnant women.  Cause mild or no illness to pregnant women.  No clear evidence to maternal enterovirus infection. https://www.google.com/search?q=pregnant+women+with+hfmd&complete=0&biw=837&bih=537&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=is ch&sa=X&ei=btkyVLeAHYykyASz9YDQBQ&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=VXFDQX-A-0uT-M%253A%3BdCReU- j9FFbX3M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fimages.medicinenet.com%252Fimages%252Fimage_collection%252Fskin%252Fhand-foot-mouth- disease-mouth.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.medicinenet.com%252Fhand-foot-and- mouth_syndrome%252Farticle.htm%3B493%3B335
