2 What is a map? A map is a drawing of a place. Many maps have symbols.
A symbol is something that stands for something else. It can be shapes, colors, or pictures.

4 What is a map key? A map key tells what symbols on a map mean.

5 Can you locate?? The map key? The symbol for a food stand?

6 What can a map show? Maps can show different things.
Some show neighborhoods, cities, land, and water. Most maps have titles. A title tells you what the map shows.

The United States is a country. (our country) A country is a land and the people who live there.

Some maps show states. A state is part of a country. The United States is made up of 50 states. What is the name of our state? Can you find it on the map?

10 How is a globe like Earth?
Earth is round like a ball. Earth is made up of land and water. A globe is a model of Earth. A model is a small copy of something.

11 These are all globes. How are they like Earth? They both show land.
They both show water. They are both round. Water is blue on a globe and on Earth.

12 What are continents? Continents are large bodies of land.
Earth has seven continents. Can you find our continent?

13 What are oceans? Earth has four oceans.
An ocean is a large body of salt water. Arctic Ocean Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Pacific Ocean Indian Ocean

14 What is the equator? The equator is an imaginary line around
the middle of the Earth. The weather is very hot at and near the equator.

15 What are the poles? The poles of the Earth are located at the
top and bottom of Earth. The North Pole is at the top of Earth. The South Pole is at the bottom of The weather is very cold at and near the poles. North Pole South Pole

16 What are directions? A compass shows directions on a map.
There are four main directions. They are the cardinal directions. The cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west. A compass shows directions on a map. (Points to the North Pole.) (Points to the South Pole.)
