1 Club Culture in the 90’s By Cem & Dan DESIGNERS REPUBLIC

2 Designers Republic was a graphic design studio founded by Ian Anderson  The company began in 1986 and ran until 2009  It was based in Sheffield, England  Anti-establishment aesthetic  Started off doing flyers for a band called Person to Person  They were known for their bright, playful imagery and minimalism  Designed record covers for electronica artists  Had great influence on graphic design, web and cover design  Closed in 2009 for various business reasons DESIGNERS REPUBLIC (TDR)

4  In 1994, Empire magazine devoted a whole issue to TDR. The copy still stands as the most successful issue in terms of sales.  Coca-cola – “Coke music”  Swatch watch design  Several Pulp album/LP/Logo artwork  Nickelodeon channel rebranding  Pringles television adverts  Moshi Moshi Sushi: Restaurant Interior, container truck kitchen, interior backdrop, logo, table signage, tea urn signage SUCCESS

5 WHAT HAVE THEY MADE?

6  In many ways, the Designer's Republic work reflects the vibrant, fun and exciting club culture up and coming in Britain during the 90’s.  At the start Ian Anderson took influence from Russian Constructivism and the rest of their work reflects on this.  “There is a feel that the culture has stalled, that there is nothing left to invent and that ‘newness’ can only lie in sampling and remixing what already exists” – Ian Anderson INFLUENCE ON 90’S CLUB CULTURE

7 RUSSIAN CONSTRUCTIVISM  1920s art movement that originated in Russia.  The vibrant, ‘pop art’ style was very dramatic reflected the new issues of the revolution, modernism and consumerism
