3 WHAT IS COPYRIGHT? Copyright is a form of legal protection automatically provided to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works. Copyright happens automatically as soon as a copy of the work is created. (Just because you don’t see the copyright symbol doesn’t mean the work is “public domain.”)

4 WHAT IS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT? Copyright infringement is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission. Only the copyright holder has the right to reproduce, distribute, sell, display or perform the protected work.

5 INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY Intellectual property is a legal term that refers to creations of the mind. Intellectual property includes music, literature, and other artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs… … and is protected by law.

7 APPROPRIATION Appropriation is the intentional borrowing, copying, and alteration of preexisting images and objects. It took on new significance in the 1950s and 60s with the rise of consumerism and the spread of popular images through mass media. What is “mass media”? What Art Movement might this be related to?
