‘I didn’t know that human hearts and souls could be so evil’

Abstract of the Genocide What: When Josip Tito the communist leader of The Republic of Yugoslavia had passed away it left politicians started exploiting nationalist ideas leaving the Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks against each other which led to a war between them. Bosnia became the target of warfare and ethnic cleansing killing over 100,000 people. Page:2 Storrie, Hutchinson

Abstract of the Genocide When: 1992, When Tito died it created a power vacuum. Political leaders wanted to be independent from Yugoslavia especially one his name was Milosevic he wanted a pure Serbian dominated state. The other 6 regions were scared causing them to consider leading the Republic. Countries with significant Serbian populations were attacked by Serbia if they left the Republic. Page:2 Storrie, Hutchinson

Abstract of the Genocide Where: Bosnia-Herzegovinia, and the other six nations that made up the former republic of Yugoslavia is located in southeastern Europe. The population of Bosnia is about 3.8 million, with 48 percent Bosniaks, 37 percent Serbs, and 14 percent Croats. Page:2 Storrie, Hutchinson

Abstract Continued Why: The Serbian leader Milosevic wanted a pure Serbian state leading to mass killings of non Serbian people such as the Muslims in Bosnia. Who: The Bosnian people ( Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats) and Serbia. How: During the Ethnic cleansing when the Serbs attacked Bosnia, city by city they followed this plan set: 1. Concentration - urge Serb residents of the city to leave, while surrounding the town and bombarding it with artillery fire. 2. Decapitation - execute the leaders and intelligentsia of the town. 3. Separation - separate the women, children, and old men from the men of “fighting age.” 4. Evacuation - move women, children, and old men to concentration camps or national borders. 5. Liquidation - execute the men of “fighting age. Page:3 Storrie, Hutchinson

Stages of Genocide Classification: Classifying a group of people by race, religion, nationality and Ethnicity. Symbolization: Giving a symbol to a group to separate them from everyone else. (ex. Name, IDs or an article of clothing.) Dehumanization: Making the population perceive a group as sub human making them hate that group more. Organization: Creating Killing squads and death lists for eliminate the group. Polarization: The group gets pushed from the main population. Preparation: Provide the final plan to eliminate the group such as ethnic cleansing. Extermination: Killing the group with mass killings (Genocide). Denial: The perpetrators try to cover up the genocide and create excuses to make it seem like they weren’t responsible for the deaths. Page:4 Storrie, Hutchinson

Genocide Stages in the Bosnian Genocide Classification: Separating Muslims from Serbians. Symbolization: The Serbs didn’t really have to symbolically pick out the Muslims because the usually specific pieces of clothing. Organization: Serbs created concentration camps to send Bosniak Muslims to during the Genocide. Polarization: Muslims and other “sub” groups were separated from the Serbian population. Preparation: Created Ethnic cleansing to eliminate the Muslims in Bosnia. Extermination: Mass killings in the city of Srebrenica, killing many Muslim people. Denial: The Bosnian Serb president said that the genocide never happened the 100,000 people who died were just casualties of war by Serbia being cautious of the Muslims taking over. 9 Reflection This Genocide shocked me, after the countries separated from the Yugoslavian Empire, Serbia started to plot to eliminate the Bosniaks. Page:6 Storrie, Hutchinson

Reflection They separated the women, children and elder men from the young men and sent them to concentration camps. This was all in the name of ethnicity which is a shame that people have to die for that reason. I learned that western countries really don’t do much when a genocide occurs, they send peace keepers but order them not to shoot. Page:6 Storrie, Hutchinson
