2 LEADERS  Archbishop Makarios III  1 st president of the Republic of Cyprus  Started a political movement for the independence of Cyprus from British Ruling  Asked for assistance from Colonel George Grivas  Leader of the political wing of EOKA  Colonel George Grivas:  Nationalistic  Believed in independence  Military leader of EOKA  Needed an organization to accomplish goal: EOKA

3 STRUCTURE  George Grivas: Main Military Leader  Grigoris Afxentiou: Second in command  Recruited more influential youth than adults  250 openly active members  1000 support members  Many of the support members had other full-time jobs  This was just a part-time job

4 POWER STRUGGLE  Grivas wanted the world to know about the organization and their goals  Makarios believed in a more peaceful way to accomplish his goal  Grivas and Makarios disagreed on many strategies Makarios eventually lost control of the terrorist group resulting in Grivas becoming the main leader

5 CONCLUSION  Makarios III  Political Leader of EOKA  Grivas:  Military Leader of EOKA  1250 members  250 active operations members  1000 underground support members  After Makarios lost control of the organization, leadership was stable as Grivas becoming the main leader
