4 experience Early life 1. He hoped to become a wealthy gentleman. 2. At the age of 17, George took a job measuring land as a surveyor. When his brother died in 1752, he inherited his large farm called Mount Vernon. 3. During the French and Indian War, he became a young soldier.

H e was elected to attend the Second Continental Congress, which met in May I n June 1775 the congress elected Washington as commander-in-chief of the American Continental Army.
