THE “ JAM HANDELER ” THE “ JAM HANDELER ”

In the modern urban world, most people spend hours commuting in heavy traffic. Time and mental energy are wasted on commuting, what can we do? The “JAM HANDELER” offers a solution to at least one side of the problem. By taking some of the car handling effort of the drivers, it allow them to relax and arrive at their destination calmer and less exhausted.

System Description The system includes 3 main parts: 1. The distance measuring unit: measures distances to obstacles in front of the vehicle. 2. The computation unit : based on the measurements and other parameters, computes the appropriate response (accelerate, brake etc.).

System Description 2 3.The control unit: control the breaks, gear and engine. Performing the computation unit’s decision.

Example Scenario Our driver is driving the highway on his (or her) way to work. As the traffic gets thick and the speeds go down, the system light starts blinking green. The driver pushes a button on the dash-board and the system takes over, the green light turns steady green. The driver let go of the pedals, but keep steering the vehicle.

Example Scenario 2 The driver decides to switch lanes. He touches the pedals, overriding the system, accelerates, switch lanes and then takes his foot of the accelerator. The system takes over again. The traffic thins out, and as speeds go up, the system tells the driver to take back the control by an audible announcement and a blinking red light on the dash board.

Quality Factors No avoidable accidents! Smooth ride, at least as smooth as with an average human driver.

Technology Measuring unit: there are two basic technologies: radio wave based and laser based. Laser technology is a bit more accurate, and would cost ~200$, but not as robust. The radio wave technology has the advantage that some cars will already include it as part of their adaptive cruise control in the near future, and then the cost is ~0$.

Technology 2 Computation unit: very low computation power needed. Cost estimated as <20$. Control unit: most modern vehicles have electronic engine management and electronically controlled braking systems, so the control unit will be mainly wiring the system to the engine and brakes.
