4 Three Main Types of CCTV System Town Centre / City Centre Surveillance ran by the police and local authorities. Mobile Surveillance Camera Units Private Business Surveillance Systems.

5 The case for CCTV CCTV reassures the public, promotes safety and creates a climate of protection. It can be used to monitor large busy places where police may not be able to fully police at all times (e.g.. Town Centres) CCTV deters criminals from committing crimes in the first place therefore reducing crime. (Strathclyde force reports a 75% drop in crime in Airdrie since CCTV was installed) CCTV leads to increased conviction rates after crimes have been detected.

6 CCTV IN ACTION: Jamie Bulger Case – This murder case brought home to people the importance of CCTV and how powerful it can be. The toddler was abducted by two young boys and then murdered. CCTV systems belonging to several shops and businesses caught the boys on tape as they took Jamie Bulger away, and helped convict them in court.

7 The case against CCTV Expensive CCTV doesn’t fully deter criminals Criminals, gangs, etc simply move to places with no CCTV coverage. Vulnerable to abuse and hackers. CCTV is a massive invasion of privacy. Images of innocent people kept on databases. In any one day a person could be filmed up to 300 times. There are up to 4.2m CCTV cameras in Britain - about one for every 14 people The UK has more CCTV cameras than any other country in Europe.

8 Groupwork You have copied down all the places you have saw CCTV and discussed some issues around CCTV. Now think about whether or not it bothers you as a person. You are going to split into groups and discuss your thoughts. Make a poster on the pro’s and con’s of CCTV
