2 Plan over the next term…
Unit 1 Fitness Online Test RESIT: Thursday June 11th 1pm SOME practical lessons Wednesday 3pm revision & CW improvements Extra revision is expected in your own time Behaviour & attitude expectations Seating plan

3 Who would you consider to be the fittest?
Starter Activity Who would you consider to be the fittest?

4 Fitness, Health and Performance: IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS, WRITE THEM DOWN!
Fitness is “the ability to meet the demands of the environment” Health is “a state of complete mental, physical, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.” Performance is “how well a task is completed.”

5 Components of fitness-
PASS- What is the component of fitness? MERIT- Give examples of sports that use the component of fitness. DISTINCTION- How can the component of fitness improve performance? Explain how they will allow an athlete to achieve excellence.

6 L/O- Identify and define the 11 components of fitness.

7 5 Components of Skill-related fitness
Agility Reaction Time Power Co-ordination Balance A B C R P

8 Agility “The ability to moves quickly and precisely or change direction without losing balance or time” Training has little or no effect on agility. Agility is especially important in sports that require a sharp movement or turn. i.e. goal keeper Can you think of any other examples?

9 Balance “is the ability of the performer to retain their centre of gravity/mass over their base of support” Two types: Static – little or no movement is produced, for example a handstand. Dynamic – movement is produced during a balance, for example, keeping your balance on a board i.e. skateboard, surfing Balance cannot really be trained, but can be improved through practise. Can you think of any other examples?

10 Coordination “The ability to use 2 or more parts of your body smoothly and accurately at the same time.” E.G. simple acts such as walking require co-ordination, but a higher level of concentration is required when performing an effective tennis stroke (footwork and arm action) Cannot be improved in training, but performing specific actions can improve them through practise. Can you think of any other examples?

11 Reaction time “The time between the presentation of a stimulus and movement (response)” For example, how quickly a table tennis player reacts to a serve. A stimulus could be anything from a starting gun In the 100m sprint, to a sudden side-step by an opponent. Reaction time can be improved in training, however this can also be more about anticipating the stimulus. Can you think of any other examples?

12 power = force (kg) × speed (time min/secs)
“is the work done in a unit of time” power = force (kg) × speed (time min/secs) Power is important in explosive events like throwing and sprinting. Boxers need power to be able to punch hard and fast. Power is vital to getting a good start in short races. Can you think of any other examples?

13 6 Components of Physical Fitness
Endurance Aerobic Muscular Flexibility Speed strength Composition Body A B S F MS ME

14 Aerobic Endurance “ability of the cardio-respiratory system to supply with nutrients and oxygen to the working muscles during sustained exercise.” It is sometime called –Cardio-respiratory fitness. Cardiovascular- Transports oxygen and nutrients to tissues in the body. It is made up of the heart, blood and blood vessels. Respiratory- Brings oxygen into the body. It is made up of the lungs and airways. Marathon runners need a high level of aerobic endurance. Can you think of any other examples?

15 Muscular Strength “the maximum force muscle can produce”.
Measured in kilograms (kg) or Newtons (N) Explosive strength- One quick contraction (javelin) Dynamic strength- Can be repeated (sit ups) Can be improved through weight training. Can you think of any other examples?

16 Speed “Time taken to cover a set distance (m/sec)” 3 types of speed:
Accelerative: sprints up to 30m. Pure: sprints up to 60m. Endurance: sprints with short recovery in-between Can you think of any other examples? You are said to be ‘born with speed’, but it can be improved through sprint training.

17 Muscular Endurance “The ability to repeatedly contact your voluntary muscles over a long time without getting tired” Professional footballers need a high level of muscular endurance to keep them moving around the pitch for 90 minutes. Essential for long distance events. Can be improved by taking part in long duration weight training activities. Can you think of any other examples?

18 Flexibility “The range of movement possible at a joint” The ability of the muscles to stretch and then return to their original position fluidly. It is important for reducing the risk of muscles strains and injuries. Gymnasts need to be flexibility to perform actions such as the splits. It can be improved by stretching on a regular basis.

19 Body Composition Ratio of fat mass : fat-free mass.
“The percentage of your body weight made up of fat, muscle, vital organs and bone.” Ratio of fat mass : fat-free mass. Fat – free mass is made up of vital organs, muscle & bones in the body. Three somatotypes: ENDOMORPH MESOMORPH ECTOMORPH

20 Video Task To reach optimal levels of performance, an athlete needs to train specific components of fitness for their sport. What components of fitness were needed to successfully complete the performance you are about to watch? Extension Q: Can you specifically identify at what points of the performance they might be required?

21

22 Task: Cut N Stick & Mix N Match!
Column 1: State whether the components is health or skill related Column 2: Match the correct definition to the component Column 3: Match the correct sporting example Column 4: Explain a way you could improve this component for optimal sporting success. DO NOT STICK UNTIL I SAY!

23 Components of fitness lesson two
BTEC Sport Unit 1 Components of fitness lesson two

24 Starter: Rank the 11 components of fitness in order of importance for YOU IN YOUR SPORT. Or use one of the following athlete examples: Cyclist in the Tour de France Footballer Swimmer in the 50m sprint

25 ********ABOVE AND BEYOND*********
Select 2 athletes e.g. Rebecca Adlington (swimmer) & Laura Robson (tennis) below… List the top 5 components you believe to be the most important for each athlete. Do their required components of fitness differ? Why? Does this affect success?

26 Blockbusters! Answer the question correctly to get a full 5- in a-row!
Answer the question wrong and it goes to the other team!

27 Task : Snakes & ladders board game

28 Worksheets & practice paper questions
