FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Factors affecting Participation!
Lesson Objective Recognise that there are factors which affect peoples participation in sport Understand the reasons why these affect peoples participation Success Criteria To read Steve Redgrave’s road to achievement statement, and highlight factors which affected his participation. To list 6 factors which might affect a person’s participation in physical activity. Making significant points (examples) for each factor. To list the 5 factors that make up a champion in sport!

Factors affecting participation
Read the following article on Sir Steve Redgrave “On Friday 22 September 2000, millions in Britain stayed up late to watch the British coxless four gain victory by just 0.38 seconds over Italy, their enthusiasm generated by the now legendary Sir Steven Redgrave who gained his fifth gold medal in the teams victory”.
4
So exactly WHAT factors can affect participation in sport and physical recreation???????
5
Gender (sex) Fewer females take part than males - around 57% of females compared with around 72% of males!
6
AGE People participate less as they get older!
Only around 33% of 70yr olds take some form of exercise 85% of 16yr olds do!
7
DISABILITY This will restrict the choice of activity. But many sports encourage disabled people, and modern sports centres have ramps for wheelchairs and special changing rooms
8
EDUCATION If your school is strong on PE and sport, and you enjoy these at school, you are more likely to participate later!
9
FAMILY Your more likely to take part in an activity if someone in the family encourages you. Most young people depend on a parent for money for kit and help with travel to events
10
PEER GROUP PRESSURE Your peer group is the group of people you associate with, who share your background and interests and are around your age! If your peer group takes part in an activity you are more likely to do!
11
POLITICS The extent of participation also depends on politicians!
E.g a government could decide: To make everyone do PE at school. To pay towards the building of sports facilities Both would have a big effect on participation
12
TRADITION & CULTURE These affect both the extent of participation and the choice of activity, e.g: Some cultures disapprove of women taking part in physical recreation in public, or in mixed company. Some nations have a strong tradition in a sport - for example cricket in the West Indies.
13
ECONOMICS Some activities (such as golf and riding) can be quite expensive. You might not be able to afford them.
14
ACCESS The easier it is to get to a sports facility, the more likely you are to go there! If the nearest one is miles away, or even abroad that makes participation difficult!
15
ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE If you live near the sea or a lake its easier to windsurf or sail. If you live in a cold climate its easier to take up skiing.
16
MEDIA The media play a big part in making sport, exercise and fitness popular. By presenting an activity as exciting, trendy or fun they encourage people to take part.

FACTORS AFECTING PARTICIPATION
18
So what makes a CHAMPION?
Think of a sporting champion. What factors make this person a champion? Write them down.
19
Write down numbers 1 to 30 and try and name these sportspeople

MYSTERY GUEST
51
What makes a champion Write as many words or sentences as possible to suggest what would be an ASSET or ATTRIBUTE to a potential sports champion?

What makes a champion
53
Factors that make a champion
PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS Determination might be one of the factors under this heading. Many of the great champions have shown this in their efforts to reach the top in their sport, and it is something that most champions have, whatever their sporting area.
54
Factors that make a champion
Sociological Factors Under this heading we might have such factors as a supportive home environment. Many champions say that their parents have spend many hours taking them to training sessions and collecting them afterwards. Parents of swimmers are famous for this!
55
Factors that make a champion
Luck There have been many champions who have said that it was a stroke of luck that helped them to become a champion. Being in the right place at the right time is lucky!!!
56
Factors that make a champion
Motor Skills Having good MOTOR SKILLS is very important, that innate talent which helps to give a person a head start on the rest of us. If one particular motor skill could be singled out it might well be speed! This is a factor that is necessary for many sports.
57
Factors that make a champion
Health and Fitness If you are not lucky enough to have a good body build or body composition for your sport, then the chances of reaching the top are reduced. However it is possible, as you will see, to improve in this area, as it is in some others too!
58
HOMEWORK For The purposes of your GCSE course, the two most important areas to look at in detail are motor skills and the one we will investigate next HEALTH AND FITNESS. What is Health? What is Fitness?
