5 BACKGROUND TO RISE OF HITLER 1919 he joined the German Workers' Party Small party with only 6 members 1920 -party renamed National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), better known as the Nazi Party. ABOLISH VERSAILLES TREATY GERMANS NOT HAPPY - BLAMED for WW1 WIN OVER ARMY HUMILIATION And WAR REPARATION DID not believe they were defeated WR ‘stabbed Germany in the back’ -betrayed Germany THUS, used Propaganda to STIR UP HATRED for VERSAILLES and BLAME on WR. Also made promises to ABOLISH VT and make GERMANY GREAT AGAIN! WAR GUILT CLAUSE UNFAIR TERMS

Weak Weimar Govt already unpopular RIGHT WING Blamed for suffering of people HATED DEMOCRACY COALITION GOVT WEAK and INEFFECTIVE THUS, NAZI PARTY PORTRAYED as representing STRONG GOVT and HOPE for GERMANS - HITLER AS SAVIOUR Could not solve economic problems STRONG CENTRAL GOVT

LEBENSRAUM UNITING Germany GERMANS = SUPERIOR ARYAN RACE Take back territories lost Union of German people - ANSCHLUSS THUS, popular with NATIONALISTS (RIGHT WING) who wanted a strong and united GERMAN EMPIRE- promised to rearm to make Germany strong again CONQUER ‘LIVING SPACE’ for expanding German Population GREATER GERMANY

JEWS made SCAPEGOATS Communists Humiliation of VT, HYPERINFLATION, UNEMPLOYMENT Feared by rich businessman and middle-class Create disorder - strikes by workers and wanted classless society THUS, NAZIS ideas popular because Germans looking for someone to blame for problems Blamed for ALL OF Germany’s problems GET RID OF JEWS and COMMUNISTS

11 Task Choose a target group who would be attracted by the policies of the Nazis and design a poster / leaflet to layout the policies that would appeal to them. Nationalists Industrialists Women Former soldiers Farmers Working class people for example! (Nb. The Nazis used specifically targeted propaganda, as they realised that what appealed to one group would not necessarily appeal to others!)
