3. Many Serbs lived in Bosnia, but it was still ruled by Austria-Hungary. Serb nationalists felt Bosnia should not be ruled by the Austrians, but by the Serbs. On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austrian throne) was traveling with his wife through Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. The Black Hand was a secret society that wanted to rid Bosnia of Austrian rule.
