web Trnsport Development Update Presented by Monelle McKay, Info Tech, Inc. September 2009

Topics Focus in the Past Year Focus in the Next Year Questions

Focus in the Past Year

Focus in the Past Year – Summary Preconstruction –Production support for evaluating and implementing agencies –Warranty fixes for reported items –Planning for Enhancement and Tech Upgrade Release 2.01 Civil Rights and Labor Management System (CRLMS) –Beta testing –Production release –Warranty fixes for reported items (online Help issue resolution) –Planning for Enhancement and Tech Upgrade Release 2.01 Construction and Materials TRTs –User requirements gathering –Planning for next steps

CRLMS Beta Testing 2 Beta Sites (Michigan, Minnesota) plus Florida for SM Planning Started in November 2008 –Weekly calls to prep (TeamTrack, training, orientation, processes, review beta test plan) Testing January through mid-April Info Tech Onsites –MI/MN for mobilization, orientation, environment checks –Follow-ups for specific testing, environment tuning 100% of Functionality for Beta, patches provided Weekly Beta Calls –Review Beta testing accomplishments and obstacles –Review Beta Issues submitted via TeamTrack –Review Beta testing plans for the upcoming week

CRLMS Beta Testing (Cont’d.) Interfaces –CAS, SiteManager, PES/LAS Main Issues Reported –Wage Decisions and Payrolls (usability issues) –Interfaces (PES/LAS, SM, CAS) –Online Help improvements (report data needs, workflows, glossary) Reports Sent to TRT/TTF –Weekly Updates (minutes) and Error Reports –Updated Beta Test Distribution Materials –Beta Test Checklist –Beta Results (final) –Beta Site Questionnaire (final)

Other Items Preview site updated with last production version (2.00.046) TRT testing sites consolidated into one and updated monthly Preliminary release made available with CRLMS Beta release Testing emphasis –Regression cycles for pre-Beta, post-Beta –Client/server modules for interfaces (also schedule alignment) Accessibility compliance efforts –Assessment with each release –508/WCAG (web content access. guidelines) standards AASHTOWare Quality Assurance Audits –Conformance to standards (e.g. testing, requirements management) –Continuous improvements

web Trnsport Enhancement and Technical Upgrade Release 2.01 Initial planning began in January 2009 –Working with TRTs to gather requirements for new functionality –Combined Preconstruction/CRLMS enhancements Preconstruction –Minimum/Maximum values (agency funded AL, MI) on project items –Category alternates CRLMS –Reports for contract payments and contract DBE participation –Bidder/Quoter information –External Access for contractor payrolls and subcontractor payments Global items –Security (password features), entity locking, numeric formatting –Packaging improvements (data dictionary with ERD, release summary, Estimator and Payroll XML file layouts)

Release 2.01 – (Cont’d.) Maintenance items (code improvements, research) Technical upgrades –Vista client –Validating VMWare as a potentially supported platform –Research on.NET upgrade from 2.0 to 4.0 Results of.NET 4.0 research showed distinct advantages to doing upgrade including –User interface improvements (e.g. navigation, controls) –External access improvements –Datasets no longer needed for reports –Easier to implement changes (proposal to contract transition, new database support…ie. SQL Server)

External Access Users outside the agency who work with the agency, but not for the agency The user and the agency need to share some information Requires a secure method for data to be shared Examples of types of external users: –Prime contractors –DBE vendors –Independent laboratories Request by CRLMS TRT Cross-functional Subgroup formed

External Access – (Cont’d.) Several approaches discussed Decided on a desktop application as an initial approach to assist CRLMS users.NET 4.0 upgrade research indicated newer technology could provide secure fully web-enabled approach Desktop approach changed to full web-enabled to set framework for future direction Incorporating new approach into Release 2.01

Web Construction and Materials 4 Additional Onsite TRT Meetings (8 total) –Consensus for construction (CAS, SM, FM) –Joint discussions (e.g. system admin, external access) –Complete functional and non-functional requirements –Cross team collaboration (CRLMS, Preconstruction, Technical, TTF) Weekly TRT Meetings –Sometimes more, especially last 2 months –Materials “power” teams and system admin to divide and conquer –Gather input from User Community (Listserve) –Finish requirements gathering by end of this month

Web Construction/Materials – (Cont’d.) Release Planning –Construction and Materials together –8 alpha test packages identified to allow user testing of cumulative subsets of functionality from start to end of a logical work flow –2 production releases (and Betas) with majority of functionality in first release –Some pre-work to prototype complex areas (e.g. Templates)

Focus in the Next Year

Enhancement/Tech Upgrade Release 2.01 Main goals to address –Preconstruction/CRLMS enhancements –External Access –User interface, usability, navigation –Asynchronous processes –Custom report development (no datasets) –Security features –New database support

Focus in the Next Year Enhancement/Tech Upgrade Release 2.01 –Preconstruction, CRLMS, Infrastructure enhancements –External User Access for Contractor Payrolls and Subcontractor Payments –User interface (UI) design and standards Working with newly formed cross-functional UI Subgroup to define navigation flows Meeting weekly with goal to have all flows completed by 01/10 Standards artifact –Support for Active Directory (AD) and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) –.NET 4.0 upgrade Code, database, reports, meta-data migration

Release 2.01 - (Cont’d.) SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008/IIS 7, Oracle 11g, IE8 added as release tested platforms –Looking to get feedback from TUG on agency plans for Windows Server 2003/IIS 6, Oracle 10g, DB2 8 and IE6 Tool upgrades (Active Reports 6.0, Robohelp 8.0) Onsite TRT Alpha testing 4 month Beta period (3 Beta sites; SQL Server, Contractors) Preliminary release available at time of Beta start Beta May 2010, Production release November 2010 Surveying community as to whether delivering Acceptance Tests for future releases is desirable

Release 2.01 – Benefits of Upgrade Focus development on providing business functionality by using infrastructure provided by frameworks User Interface navigation and controls easier to implement, test and train (e.g., work flow based) Ability to improve user interface with less development effort Security features easier to implement Easier to extend application functionality to External users Expanded web services Integrated asynchronous processing and reporting New database management systems easier to implement

Focus in the Next Year - (Cont’d.) Web Construction and Materials TRTs next steps –Wrap up final User Requirements by end of September –Begin next phase, Systems Analysis and Preliminary Design Planning already begun Proposal being prepared for TTF for the System Requirements Specification (SRS) and Functional Design Specification (FDS) elements (windows and report layouts) Construction and Materials Develop SRS/FDS in accordance with release plans for alpha packages Continued TRT involvement to review and provide input to analysis process

Web Construction/Materials - (Cont’d.) Work Plan for Development Project –Based on 2 releases with first release having majority of functionality (Contract Admin, Diary/DWR, Change Orders, Contractor Payments, Templates, Material Sampling and Testing, Sampling and Testing Requirements, LIMS capabilities, Mix Designs, Approved Lists, Reference Data) –2 nd release (Permits, Document Submissions, Disputes/Claims, Design Evaluations, Force Accounts, Standalone, Archiving, DSS Contracts) Project solicitation (Construction and Materials)
